Yes the little metal leaves that form the pins of the lock barrel seize up and then anything that fits the slot will open the lock.
Barrel replacement is the repair as you have suggested. I just did away with them and fitted central locking instead. Still got a barrel in the rear door in case of battery/system failure. |

Same problem with one of mine, I removed barrel and I fond that the lock spring plates rusted down
I removed each lock spring plates one at a time, removed spring and cleaned the lock spring plates with 1200 grit sand paper, resemble in the right order with micro fine graphite still working fine to date but also got hold one there Click image to enlarge key and barrel set for 2A onwards |

Thank, I may try that as well. If I do decide to replace the barrel, is there a place where I can buy a barrel keyed to my other door, or do I need to replace both if I want to use a single key for both doors? Central locking is also a great idea, but the door switches on my car don't even work properly, so I am a bit hesitant to fit more electrics to my doors as I fear it will be more of a job than I set out for... 1.the one i had trouble with had Central locking and only one door lock needed but you can get key and barrel set for all your doors
2. I can buy a barrel keyed to my other door, if you have the key number tag( its small aluminium disk) at the time with my barrel key problem(LRJ have not get back to my about key number barrel more than 24 months now ) witch the resent for perchance new key and barrel set |
