New nipples fitted and I re-bled the brakes with the Gunson eezibleed. This time success Smile
It must have been the knackered threads on the old nipple that were allowing air in as it wobbled tight.
Thanks again! Thumbs Up
Ps... The new nipples (I ordered a pair) were some length longer than the nipples that were on there. I was worried these wouldn't fit but they did. It turns out the nipples seal on the point and not the nut section at the top of the nipple.

I haven't even looked into this yet. Funds are a bit tight at the moment so it will have to remain on the to do list for now.
Let me know what you decide on?
I bled the brakes yesterday with the easy ble I bled the brakes yesterday with the eezibleed. One of the nipples, although it ran clear and bubble free when wide open, as soon as I started to tighten it lots of bubbles were released. I would try again and wide-open the fluid runs out clear and purple free then as it is tight and bubbles are released. The brake pedal isn't 100% and I wondered if you'd ever seen this before?
Cheers, Dan.

Changed half shafts today with Bearmach, they were a good price from Hunters Land Rover. They're a hard thing to judge by examination by eye but sounded good (heat treated steel has a certain ring when it's hardened and tempered) so fingers crossed. Thumbs Up I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

Thumbs Up have you got rid of the clunk when changing gear, reversing, going forward etc? Given how smoothly my brake pads change went (a.k.a. a full caliper rebuild Smile) it would just about be my luck that it's not just the half shafts but teeth on the diff too Shocked
Have you got a link to the half shafts that you bought?
Cheers, Dan.

The drive is really quite good as the half shafts were the last link in the chain to be replaced, after bushes, UJ's, A frame ball joint etc. Thumbs Up I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

It's all about making it better than when it was new. To be fair mines an early model Puma and they seem to be very good or exactly the opposite, Land Rover don't appear to believe in mediocrity. The drive line in particular has improved dramatically with a quite pleasant gear change now, I'm surprised how much the slack and backlash affected the gear selection. The other thing to affect the gear change was using BP ultimate fuel and Millers Eco-boost additive, because the engine revs more freely at lower speeds it has improved the gear change a fair bit, a welcome side effect. Like most on the forum we do it as a labour of love and provided SWMBO doesn't get too rattled then it keeps us out of trouble. I started on the spanners in1965 and sadly a lot of stuff is just too heavy on the Defender for me now, I'm never going to attempt to take another transfer box out on my own that I do know, but I still "enjoy" keeping my hand in. Thumbs Up I started with nothing and still have most of it left!
