cc Changed half shafts today with Bearmach, they were a good price from Hunters Land Rover. They're a hard thing to judge by examination by eye but sounded good (heat treated steel has a certain ring when it's hardened and tempered) so fingers crossed. ![]() |

The drive is really quite good as the half shafts were the last link in the chain to be replaced, after bushes, UJ's, A frame ball joint etc. ![]() |

It's all about making it better than when it was new. To be fair mines an early model Puma and they seem to be very good or exactly the opposite, Land Rover don't appear to believe in mediocrity. The drive line in particular has improved dramatically with a quite pleasant gear change now, I'm surprised how much the slack and backlash affected the gear selection. The other thing to affect the gear change was using BP ultimate fuel and Millers Eco-boost additive, because the engine revs more freely at lower speeds it has improved the gear change a fair bit, a welcome side effect. Like most on the forum we do it as a labour of love and provided SWMBO doesn't get too rattled then it keeps us out of trouble. I started on the spanners in1965 and sadly a lot of stuff is just too heavy on the Defender for me now, I'm never going to attempt to take another transfer box out on my own that I do know, but I still "enjoy" keeping my hand in.
