ReWheeling my 90
Hi,

So I only bought my first 90 on Saturday... and the only bit so far that irks me is the wheels/tyres (image attached).

It's got some Disco (I think) alloys on and Gen Grabber 205/80 R16 which I recently discovered are pants in the mud.

Honestly, 90% of my driving will be road based so I want something moderately quiet and economical... but when it comes to going off road I at least want them to work...

I tried going through posts and comments and google and... well I'm no closer to knowing what is right than I was when I started.

I don't want huge chunky, wide tyres... but will sacrifice form for function where I must... I affectionately look at these and see them as the perfect (looking) wheels:

Advice?

How long is a piece of string....

I assume you've seen these http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic46417.html

I run the standard Continentals and as much as I dislike them (stone flicking and aesthetically) I've not got stuck yet. I don't serious off-road but been in the mud and they do perform pretty well.

I want to change them for 265x75R15 BFG KO2's All Terrains, when I find the right alloys and save up a bit! James

205/80 R16 tyres standard size for land rover defender 90 if go for 750 x 16 or 235 x 85 x 16 be aware that you will have speedo errors i.e. speedo will read 30 mph and road speed = 35 mph !

FRC3312 [ 90" - 205 x 16 tyre - 22 teeth - Yellow.. ]
FRC3310 [ 90" - Blue. - 20 teeth ] for 750x 16 / 235 x 85 x 16

Hello

Much talk about wheels / tyre combinations.

I run continental cross contact. I find them great as 95% of my driving is on road. I think they are 235/85/16 original size for the defender so that's good enough for me. Grippy on wet roads and I've had no issues. Also good that people do seem to change them for wider, 265 tyres which means some great second hand (brand new tyre).

I picked up two take off tyres for my Sankey (so the car and trailer match) for £70 !! the tyres are around £110 each !

If you go wider ie, 265 your more than likely going to go noisier? the tread on the off road tyres also make them sound more tractor like, not that a Defender is ever quite... Then if you do off road depending upon your offset you will maybe want dirt defenders to stop mud flying up the sides.

I'm happy with mine?

What is your budget as often 16" boosts for sale with tyres, look great on your landy.

OK... this is where it all goes pear shaped... can I ask which of you is correct?

"235 x 85 x 16 be aware that you will have speedo errors"

and next post...

"235/85/16 original size for the defender "

And in a different thread I was told that my tyres are smaller than standard... but in the catalogue they are listed as an option, but so are 235/85/16...

So... *confused even more*

I'm really after the classic utilitarian look, i.e. steel... budget? Dunno, maybe £500 - £700 for a set... don't need to be new...

Not your old ones, your new ones...

"I replaced them with exactly the same again wheels but with BFGoodrich Mud Terrain tyres fitted."

Where did you get the new ones/how much?

I wouldn't want to use my new ones for 90% road, I've bought them specifically for off road duties, I have another set for road work.

Assuming my speedo is out? with 235/85/16 although these I thought are std Defender Puma size.

I also use a ultra gauge and use the digital speed on this, being plugged into the OBD socket I use this more so than look at the analogue speed, I would assume this is more correct.

Agree the steels would suit Smile

It is possible to get a set of five steel wheels with 7.50R16 Michelin Latitudes in new or nearly new condition for less than £400, though some people ask for more. The only slight snag is when you come to replace them if you can't find a second hand set they're fairly pricey, like £130 each.

My speedo reads a little over, by the time I get to 84 indicated my satnav says 79 but it's hardly the end of the world and will read more accurately than 205s I'd have though. TD5 90s might be different but I'm not sure.

Wanting to avoid chunky/wide tyres but willing to sacrifice looks for utility: narrow tyres will do better off road in almost all scenarios. Traction depends on the length of contact with the ground, which is why is you want to have lots of sideways traction for cornering you need wide tyres.

My old set of Latitudes weren't quite as good off road as my 255/85R16 BFG Muds but tbh they both slipped and slid all over the shop in the same thick gloop and they both got me out the other side. The noise of the BFGs in comparison was horrendous so I sold them. I've recently done some tracks following a car with 265/76R16 BFG AT KO2s and definitely wouldn't have wanted to swap them after he slid sideways down a hill and nearly had to be winched backwards out of it. Mine just carried on driving in the direction I pointed it (following him).

Defender standard tyres... 7.50R16 on Puma poverty spec models. 7.50R16 on TD5 County spec utility models. 235/85R16 on most others. Early 90s had 205R16s like you have, and the NAS spec ones had 265/75R16 for the Tonka Toy look.

Steel wheels. There are two models of Land Rover steel wheels, plus a load of aftermarket ones of varying quality. There are the standard steel wheels which are 5.5" wide and can only really fit 205s and 7.50s although some people against the recommendation of tyre companies do fit 235s to them. The others are the Wolf wheels which have a different offset (they stick out a bit more), are wider at 6.5", stronger and have the little holes all the way round the edge. Genuine are relatively pricey but you can get knock offs of varying load ratings. 90 and 110 came with the standard ones, 130 came with the Wolfs. A Wolf can take 7.50, 235/85 and 255/85 tyres so is a more versatile wheel.

Your cheapest option would be to stick with your current wheels and git a decent set of 235/85 all terrain tyres. My choice would be the Cooper AT3 but there are an awful lot of BFG fans that will tell you that's a silly idea Smile
Plenty of discussion on the forum on them, or this makes some good introductory reading: http://expeditionportal.com/where-the-rubber-meets-the-road/
