Thanks Guys.

Such a relief to have her all back together.

She needs some fettling, I want to get the timing checked and do the oil change but overall I'm just pleased its done! Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Having now gotten over the giddy excitement of being back in my truck again I have now got some further points to look at.

I want to check the timing so a timing set has been ordered and an oil change will be on the cards very soon.

I need to have another look at the tappets as I had only set them cold so need to get the engine up to temp and see how they are when warm.

Does anyone have any hints or tricks?

Also need to sort the flapping exhuast.

Currently I have just got it bolted onto the turbo down pipe and not to the side of the engine as none of it lined up and none of it wanted to fit properly. Not sure if the pipe is correct to be honest. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

as i was on my own i found turning crank via bar a chore! it was much easier to jack front nearside wheel stick it in 5th and turn the tyre with my hand/foot. this way you can line your eyes with the rockers and watch as they come up and down Thumbs Up My 109 thread

Interesting, I found it was ok just to turn over with a ratchet socket?

That was without injectors and glow plugs though. (Did make a very satisfying sucking and blowing noise though Whistle)

I seem to have also now got the same slight intake popping you have with a pulsing air at the intake.

I'm going to make some further investigations tonight but only thing I can think of is ether valve settings, breather issues or possibly timing.

Maybe its a turner engineering thing Laughing

Will report back tonight with findings hopefully! Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

You mentioned not being able to bolt the exhaust to the block. On my 200tdi I found the aftermarket exhaust downpipe I purchased was about 10mm too long at the turbo end. Quick adjustment with a 1mm cutting disk soon sorted this! 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power

Good Shout Hazza, It looks like the bracket which bolts the pipe to the bracket on the engine has been welded on wrong as it seems off at an angle. Problem is wiggling in and out is such a faff! Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Tappets should be set cold, so don't worry about that. Timing is easy enough to check through the inspection plate, though it's worth changing the kit if it's due or unknown of course.

Turning it over with a ratchet is ok I find, it's easy to go a bit too far though.

*** Big Update time***
Well, better late than never as they say.

Last Saturday at 9am there was a hive of activity on the Shaggydog driveway as my 2 willing helpful volunteers (best mate and Miss Shaggydog) set about the engine to get it sorted.

Everything was put in place tightened up, fluids topped up (battery charged Rolling Eyes) and she was started and left on tickover for about a hour to get up to temperature and to make sure nothing was leaking or doing anything it shouldn't.

Wires were passed through for the webasto into the battery box ready for instillation and the correct parts for the switch gear were selected ready to be put into the dashboard.

So, with the engine up and running and for some reason now in thick Halloween eve fog all 3 of us climbed back into familiar surroundings and set off into the mist.

Much to our terror as I worked my way up the gears we heard an almighty noise, which sounded like someone had put a piece of string tight over the intake of a supercharger. Every time the turbo kicked in it seemed to shreek away loud as anything which must have been terrifying for anyone out in the fog at that time, particularly on Halloween eve!

So back to base and bonnet up again we checked all the pipework to make sure it was nice and tight and nothing had popped off. Everything was tight so with puzzled looks we inspected the air filter- nice and clean and normal, very odd. So with puzzled looks we pondered over a cup of tea when purely by coincidence I decided to push my finger up against one of the intake manifold nuts. Loose as a wizards sleeve Banging Head

So of came the intercooler pipework, off came the turbo oil ways and off came the exhaust and exhaust manifold. Yep you guessed it, we had put the bolts and nuts on and done them up finger tight but not then come back and re torqued them. Oh bother, what numpties we are, what a faff or words to that effect were grumbled as we tightened them up to the set torque and set about rebuilding it.

Once all was back together we took her for another test drive which was thankfully now free of spooky noises in the mist. we trundled around for about a hour going up and down the gears and returned home triumphantly for a cup of tea.

She seems a little down on power, my only guess is that now with reconditioned injectors and performance head ether the injector pump is struggling to keep up or the increased flow rate has meant it is running a little lean and requires a bit of a tune up. Any suggestions?

Thank you everyone who has helped by contributing tips or offers of help or advice or to those who have just enjoyed the read.

Will hopefully get a video up soon of her running and with a bit of luck once the webasto is sorted out and Miss Shaggydogs 110 is sorted out I may even get a picture of them together!

Thanks again!

Good to hear it is back up and running. Easy mistake to make about the bolts, we've all done it!

As an aside, it's generally not a good idea to leave a diesel engine like this ticking over for extended periods of time. Can lead to glazing of the bores.

Before worrying too much about it seeming a bit down on power drive it for a coupe of weeks to get it settled and get yourself used to it again. If you're still concerned then further investigation can be taken. Could be something simple like timing etc.

Glad its not just me Laughing

As a rule I don't ever leave her just sat on tick over but I wanted to get her up to temperature in a safe environment rather than by ragging her up and down a bypass.

She seems to be settling in well so it may just be from coming away from the td5, but even so. It struggles to climb to 60mph from 50 whereas before it would do it quite easily.

Don't know, see what happens!

To be honest I'm just over the moon to be back driving her again Very Happy Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Glad you're running again. They're never perfect after major work, there's always some fettling and fine tuning to be done Smile

Thanks Mo Thumbs Up

Land rovers are never finished, there is always something that needs a bit of work, even from factory.

But I'm nearly back to factory standard Smile
