Likewise pro hunter kit is very good. For a more 'cargo' look try Arktis waterproof trs c310 code I think they are. I use the latter for Beating when I don't want to rip the harkilas to bits or am worried I might! Cheers

HOLY MOLY. Out of interest and never having heard of Harklilas, I goggled them. For that sort of money for a pair of trousers, I'd hope they came with a nice young maid to help you put them on 110 D250 SE HT

Depends how nicely you sweet talk the shop assistant
I must say I've got the Pro Hunter X jacket and even though only had it 9 months it's been worth it. Not sure about the trousers though, I tend to go through trousers rather rapidly so haven't quite plucked up the courage to try a pair yet. Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

its like anything, you get what you pay for. i have tried alot of different brands/styles over the years and the Harkila kit for waterproofness is the best i have found so far for durability. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Looks like the daughter will be like her Mum and not particularly like pigeons. Shot a pair today that were camping out in the barn and wasn't fussed on picking them up. Still suspect she'll turn out alright, first retrieve was a phesant and a runner at 10 months old so can't really complain.
Happy to have me back in the house after building Mark I of the duck plucked and curled up by the fire. Click image to enlarge Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

I had my last day of the season yesterday. There must be a law for finding some form just as you put the gun back in the cabinet? On the downside the dog picked up an injury (from a stick poking her chest as she ran through cover) but a bit of purple sanitiser and she seems ok.
There was no point me trying to teach my lad my bad habits so off to the clay ground at Ombersley to learn properly! Click image to enlarge |

I've been invited to a shoot (semi formal...informal afair) to take a peg, can anyone give me a heads up what to expect? I've worked the dog on some informal stuff before etc and obviously clay stuff etc, ive set up some formal shoots and the neighbouring farms have stuff on, but this is my first proper affair - so i dont want to embarrass myself or my friends on the day...so pointers gratefully received Mike

Surprised you haven't had an answer yet.
If you don't know the etiquette, just follow the example of more experienced Guns. I'm sure you know the basics, like keeping your gun broken or in its slip when in company or not on you peg. Not shooting low birds, not swinging through the line and most of all DON'T SHOOT THE BEATERS! These days I am a beater (and got absolutely soaked as it rained all day today. ) |

Mike,
I am surprised, too, that no one has jumped in. I teach loads of people who are in the same boat as you. If you have a good shooting school to hand ( you can always PM me & I can make suggestions once I know where you live) I would go & have a shooting lesson on their tower. You can pick the brains of a good instructor as to what you should & shouldn't do. Unless you can completely & utterly control your dog I would not take a dog. You either shoot OR work a dog esp. if it is your first time out. Be early DO NOT BE LATE. Take enough cartridges - if it is a 100 bird day - make sure you have at least 100 cartridges ( & so on). Make sure you have enough cash for tips/sweepstakes/fines etc. Take a couple of snacks with you + Extra strong mints ( not Polos they fit down a 12b) Spare socks, hat, gloves & sunglasses ( both for eye protection & birds are usually driven with the sun behind you). Ear defenders & gunslip. Pair of shoes to put on at lunchtime. Plus take lunch with you IF you are not being fed + a flask or two. Don't forget which peg number you drew in the morning ( you usually move up 2 each drive) Be polite even if you have a poor day , talk to the beaters/pickers up etc. Don't tell them that you have shot more birds than you actually have as they will be looking for them at the end of the drive. To start with only shoot birds out in front. Keep quiet walking to your peg. Stay on your peg unless instructed to move. Find out if you are "live on the peg" OR you can start/stop on the whistle. Find out the rules about ground game / woodcock /foxes etc. Have respect for the game you have shot - don't fling it in the game cart Pick up ALL your cases plus any others you find ( take a plastic bag to put them in) Use Fibre wad cartridges. Drink - some shoots it can flow freely. ONE small drink after the first drive often steadies most people's nerves. Don't be forced into having a drink if you don't want one. There's loads of other things but most of all be safe - don't shoot unless you are absolutely sure of your target AND what is behind you target upto 275m. That's just some of the stuff you will need to know. If you want to know more just ask away Have fun Guy May your life be like toilet paper ; long & useful. |

One day left on our shoot. Very mucky on Monday (Florence looked like she was properly used today). Not a big day, but I shot a couple of good’uns which has given me my mojo back. Dogs behaviour variable but pleased with the youngster - a natural beater. Gun shopping next month for my 50th 😜
