my defender has had a couple of 'fixes' done on the EGR, symptoms were v similar to yours (not so much clatter, but hunting revs)
all sorted seemingly easily on warranty and been ok since second time *touch wood* Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Hopefully its nothing too serious, it has been running as sweet as a nut, I suppose it has to throw a wobbly ever now and again Will call my dealer, they are always really helpful in sorting things out. Keith |

Yeah it wasn't much serious I don't think when mine was done (assuming it's similar/same problem)...
A new gasket or valve or ECU update or something (or combination thereof) fixed it if I remember, all covered by extended warranty Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Definitely sounds like a sticking EGR to me, I had pretty much the same as you when my EGR started to go.
Easy swap out but some of the nuts are difficult to get at. What you don't want is the EGR sticking open as it'll stall at idle and be almost impossible to restart. When mine started to play up, it did stall and wouldn't restart for a while. I guess that it unstuck itself and closed which meant it started, then when I rev'd the throttle you could hear the valve opening and closing but is was very noisy. You could even hear it when driving. Then the self clean just became very loud. Swapped it out and it transformed the performance too, so it was probably pretty sooted up. I've still got the one I removed and when I get a chance I will strip it an clean it out. I'll keep it as a spare. Interestingly mine did exactly the same thing last Saturday at the end of a long run, and it has the EGR deactivated in s/w.

Usually, an EGR issue causes an airleak (when it's stuck open). Therefore, the sympton could be air leaking from anywhere. Craig Rogers

He's a bit more thought....
My map sensor manifold (If that's the right description - the tube that holds the map sensor) Is leaking slightly. How much of a leak would it take to throw the calibration out and sound clattery? Not easy to quantify i'm sure. Would it have to be very significant or could just a slight leak cause it? Many thanks. |
