Oh dear, what have I broken and should I be worried ?
Noticed a tinny rattling sound over last day, almost like a lose exhaust clamp, only happens at 1,400rpm but was driving me mad. Found the cause, it a factor in some kind of steel bracket (?) runs above exhaust and under alternator - have marked it with arrow - you can see fracture which is hidden under alternator at other end of bracket in bottom pic BUT photo my be wrong way up as was taken at a weird angle in iPhone.

What does the bracket do and should I be worried. Have 'fixed' rattle simply by packing it at the broken end, but clearly if its supposed to be doing a job that is hardly going to help in the long run.

Any advice welcome

That bracket should support the exhaust manifold heat shield, I had the same problem except the noise was amplified by the heat shield vibrating as it was no longer mounted securely. Broke in the same place too, although mine wasn't helped by the rear mounting bolt falling out...

Cheers Fifth Horseman (dread to think how that name came about !) I did wonder what it was for - so do i also have a heat shield missing too Shocked Guess I need to see what a 'normal' engine looks like so I can compare - if anyone out there could take a pic of their bracket I would be really grateful

The name has Terry Pratchett connections (Thief of Time) - long story.

The main parts are
1 Bracket LWQ500190 approx £5
2 Manifold heatshield JPY500060 approx £22
3 Cat heatshield WEB500670 approx £9
Bit dark to take a photo at the moment so hope this diagram helps.

Hi Kez, another early riser I see!!!

Judging by the photo you do not have the Turbo heatshield that sits to the rear of the alternator, covering the Turbo. Large, shaped and rippled silver cover over the turbo. Big Cry

Yeh, I spotted that WelshGas, wonder where it went. Having said that can't have been doing that much as apart from the now silenced rattle, no other effects. I have a sheet of proper heat shield material so will knock up something when i get a moment just in case. Time for coffee Smile

Cheers Fifth Horseman , thats really helpful.

I must admit I am slightly overwhelmed by the helpfulness of people on this forum.

There is a really nice feeling to the place, over the years I have been involved one way or another with quite a few automotive groups, and I really do think the members here are in a league of their own.

Thanks again mate,
Kez

thanks go beyond.

does anyone have an illustration of whats behind the heat shield?

the reason I ask is bolt number 6 thats prone to falling out fixes 3 items together the best I can tell (heat shild hanger, manifold and in the middle some other heavy metal bracket?)

as the heavy metal bracket doesn't line up with manifold hole I'll like to see what it's connected to so I can see how to adjust it.

many thanks.

On my Defender the heat shield, the metal strip it attaches too, and the bolt that holds the metal strip and catalytic converter in place are all missing. Do I need to replace them? I mean what does this heat shield actually do?

Is this a trick question Charlie? Whistle I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

No its a serious question. Considering that the heat shield rattles, that the mounting plate snaps and the bolts holding it all together fall out (see above comments) I am wondering what the penalty is for not having the heatshield attached? My best guess is a loss in HP as the engine air intake is hotter and more expanded, but then I am just learning about engines, so really I dont know.
