Diff oil change
Hi folks
Changed the oil in front and rear diffs 2 week ago on my 2009 Puma. Unfortunately the drain plugs dripped ever since so I drained them again today to put sealant on the plugs this time. Anyway the 2 week old oil I drained out was very dirty already and completely black in the front diff.
Is this normal or should I be concerned? Possibly the original oil I drained was so dirty its still dirt left over from then. What do you think?
Cheers

Is it a big job to stop to stop the grease leak through?

I guess over time the seal goes and it intrudes.

I've possibly got the same issue - whilst it may be "normal" in the sense that many have this issue, it's not how my axle was designed. The axle shaft seal must be leaking.

Depends on how often you want to strip it down to replace the seals to keep it how it was designed. It will not do any harm, perhaps a little leakage at your wheel centres may be evident later. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Its not a massive issue, it is definately one of those jobs which is about £2 of parts but £100 of labour.

There be the seal.

Thats the axle it comes off.

If your only doing the seal you can get away with just removing the hub assembly whole with the ball intact. However it will be effing heavy!

If it was me, I really wouldn't worry. I only did mine as it was off to do the swivel and it needed doing.

I wouldn't bother making a special task to do it, wait until your swivels are warn or you need to replace a swivel bearing and then do it all in one go Thumbs Up Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Thanks all for the replies. Glad to hear its a common issue and not a serious one. I suppose I'd better add that job to the list of others for the future.

Do you think there is a perfectly working Defender somewhere out there? I wonder........

The swivels used to be filled with EP90 the same as the diffs before Landrover introduced all this one shot CV grease nonsense. I have flushed my swivels out with EP90 and gone back to oil as it is easier to monitor the level and check for any water ingress. It also avoids the problem of the grease mixing with the oil when the seal fails Thumbs Up

I always thought oil is better then grease as it gets up around top swivel better

grease was only a bodge repair to save having to replace the hub seals when they started leaking

Hi,
I have the same problem, grease going somewhere, a part in the diff because the level was to high.
I have try to empty the swivel of the grease , not easy , did one screw of the pin holder.
On one side, nothing, on the other side a little. (3 years, 84.000km )
Try to put the one shot grease inside, forget to turn the wheel ...

So , I agree with you, the problem is that I have any level hole anymore !
