Diff (front and rear) oil change
yesterday night I changed the front and rear diffs. oils.

I know that, normally, the front diff. are more stressed (every time the front oil was worst than the rear one) but in this car (33.000 km) it was very very BAD!!!

I think that a little amount of water could be entered from the ventilation pipe, just on the connector from the axle and the pipe (it is a fast rilsan type connection, like used on the air compressors/plant).

SO, my question is: same of us had changed the diffs. oils? have you noted anythings strange?

I suggest to all to control/change the diffs. oils.

Daniele

p.s.
during this week(end) I'll change gearbox and rid. oils too.......... Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

I changed mine @ 15000 km and it was ok. I have magnetic drain plugs on both. You should be wondering now, how the swivels are Whistle Puma 110" SW

Ah so that explains it. I changed the front and rear after 35,000km (16 months) and noticed the rear wasn't to bad but the front was black and old. I'd done an initial change two weeks after I bought the Puma (5,000km) and I remember it wasn't that bad.

Are the swivel housings grease or oil filled on the Puma? 110 2.4TDCi

The manual on swivel housing lubrication does not realy explain how to check levels or refill with grease. Any Ideas?

Lubrication
The differential, swivel pin housing and wheel hubs are individually lubricated and separated by oil seals (7) and (Cool,
see J6267A, to prevent oil transfer across the axle when the vehicle is traversing steep inclines. The wheel bearings
are lubricated with grease and the swivel housing and differential with oil. On later vehicles, identified by having only
a filler plug in the swivel housing, grease is used to lubricate the housing assembly,

Thanks. Seems better just to top up if necessary. Has anyone ever checked swivel housing level through the filler plug and if so is the EP0 quite liquid that you would get an actual level to feel?

I also checked the manual and found two different specs for the rear and front diff oil quantities and brands.
One part says 1.7 litres front and 2,26 litres rear. Other part says 1,6 front and rear.
They also specify Molytex EP90 or later in the book Castrol EPX 80W-90.
Are these the same? We do have Castrol down the road so would be easier to get that brand. Puma 110 - gone

For the quantity, the filler hole do the level, I try to explain me better:

when you fill the NEW oil, fill it up to it came out from the hole.

If the oil in front axle is black coloured, it's contaminated by the swivel housings grease, that don't matter about quality, but be carefull and check the quantity of grase in the swivel housings.

Otherwise if the color is light brown, like maionese, means that wather had contaminated the oil. Matteo

Thanks Matteo,

it's black and the oil have the Moly grease smell.

if you see the design of the oil ring (nr. 8 on the first draw) it retain the oil but not te grease. Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

Not necessarily. With the swivel still warm you could take the lower pin and bearing, letting the stuff to drain out.

Am i missing something Grease for life should be in the swivels and therefore they shouldnt need to be drained and thus only checked through the top plug (there should be a rear drain one)

As for the diff oil...i wonder Mike

THey are supposed to be greased/sealed for "life". I was just mentioning the above in case of water contamination. The only plug is to fill in with one shot grease (#STC3435) which is about 350 cc. Puma 110" SW
