Correct, they must not be removed.

They are only present on vehicles with rear seats and seat belts, which is the reason why some vehicles don't have them.

My TD5 is a station wagon with front and middle raw seat, the rear is a cargo area, no seat belt there I think! Rolling Eyes

I drew round the outline on one of my defenders and made 2 plastic spacers for each that made them clear the bolt Very Happy

that might be a good idea, I steal a pic from a member here...
This grab handle has a different bolt hole that clear the corner bolt from the crossmember, also see a spacer in between!

Able to put them on today, that 4 conner bolts hold a piece of metal plate in between the crossmember, I took out 2 of them, keep other 2 on, that was really PITA to put on the grab handle, since the 2 inner bolts were somewhat block behide!
But I have small hand...spending sometime and done it!

Is that a parking sensor or a reversing beeper next to it? Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Pardon my ignorance but what are the grab handles used for?I know the clue is in the name but other than lashing rope to tie stuff down............I cannot see their purpose given their position!

Grab handles like these were a feature of Land-Rovers from the year dot, and in the very early days were probably intended to give you something to hold if you were trying to 'unstick' a bogged vehicle (it made a certain sense with an 80", which was relatively light in weight). They continued to be fitted until fairly recent times - into the coil spring era - but there purpose has always been a bit obscure since the weight of the vehicle became such that two stong men could no longer lit the back off the ground.

Realisticly they probably only have two purposes now. 1) as a measure of protection for the rear lights, and 2) a cosmetic purpose as a nostalgic throw-back to to the roots of the Landrover.

Personally however pointless I like them and still think the rear cross-member looks bare without them. Landrover really should be fitting galvanised grab handles to the Heritage edition!

(They're also handy to tie your rear mudflaps to when off-road).

I'm with blackwolf in that the rear cross member nbeeds something to finish it off but I prefer the Lightweight solution:

Quite new to Defender here. Just looked up eBay and found the grab handles. However they don't come with any bolt sets.

Just wonder where I can find the bolts for the grab handles?? Many thanks
