DOH !
I think I may have guessed where some of my problems lie - I don't think I've ticked the box which relates to keeping stuff on the server? been looking for an email but suspect it's on my laptop at home but not on my blackberry or webmail - sound about right? |

Some email clients will let you delete off server after downloading or keep emails on server for xx days and then delete.
Sounds about right if all the devices are sharing the same email address. Setup might depend on what device you want to keep the emails on. I suspect Laptop (probably more space than on a Blackberry?) 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

I'll have a look tonight but I'm not sure there's the option as to where they should be kept ie laptop / BB - just a tick box for keeping on the server - I presume however the email account is with ie talktalk?

I'm no expert but I guess from what you describe you want the PC to be the main full audit trail of emails and the mobile is used just to deal with stuff whilst you are out and about
Tell your BB to never delete the emails from the server and on Outlook set it to 'keep a copy of the message on the server' but then to delete messages from the server after, say 7 days. Also, set your BB to blind carbon copy yourself on every email you send from it. I'm running Outlook 2007 currently but I assume these settings are the same in more recent versions. I have a Samsung moby rather than a BB but in my 'muddle through it small business' experience this should ensure that you always get your emails on the PC (then you can back up the office pst file to a cloud or the like for extra peace of mind) and equally, when you're out and about, you'll get your emails to the BB and any reply you send is copied to yourself and that will be picked up by the PC too. Works well for me... That said, I am about to go to Office 365 and full on cloud mullarky which I guess, eliminates all of the above but I've admitted defeat on this and getting somebody that knows what they're doing to set it up and migrate mailboxes/data etc... I have seen that error mean a few things, including when the email address is incorrect! (happened when auto forwarding was setup / had an out of office reply setup)
I would get the person to send you an email to confirm the address is correct and go from there. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

550 usually means you are trying to use an outgoing mail server that the network you are connected to won't allow (or vice versa). Often happens if you are connected through some network on which you are a guest (limited by the network) or the owner of the mailserver is trying to make it secure. Real pain, sorry, no easy answers, but many networks provide an alternative outgoing mail server. That's not a dent, it's a rivet. That's not a dent, it's a rivet. That's not ... oh! That is a dent!

You do not say whether you mean Outlook.com or Microsoft Outlook office programme.
Microsoft Outlook office programme will configure its ports automatically when first setting up the account so you do not need to do so manually. Outlook .com is a web based mail server so you do not need to worry about ports. Outlook .com only needs your email address and password although if you have not used the service for three years your email address may have been deleted by Microsoft and that may be why you are having problems with the service. If you are referring to Microsoft Outlook office programme then you will need this information when setting up outlook, obviously your name or how you wish your sent mail to be identified to you Account type usually Pop3 but not always check with your service provider if in doubt Your email address as given by your service provider Your server account user name and password When typing pop3 and smpt you will need to add your ISP address such as this pop3.freeserve.com and smpt.freeserve.com as an example. thanks guys.
hmmm. it's an email address that I know is correct cos it's a reply that I was trying to complete. I'm on my usual home wifi connection and I haven't (to the best of my knowledge) changed anything so I'm a little confused? I'll have another delve into this and see if I can find anything that might give some clues. ? thanks again. |

550 relay not permitted
In order to send mail through mail servers, the email program must be configured to use SMTP Confirmation. Most email programs include a tick box in the account configuration with the label ‘This server requires authentication’. That box should be ticked, otherwise look for a setting on the outgoing server settings that refers to authentication and set it to use the same username and password as for the incoming server. Though it is odd you are getting the error message 550, the error means you are not permitted to send an email via the server that you are attempting to send the email from, I say odd because most ISP’s are able to detect that the mail programme is from a customer due to the ISP controlling the users internet connection.
