It came on twice for only 2 or 3 seconds coming down Hardknock Pass and same last night....on a very down hill for just a couple of seconds and then went away.
Got home and checked levels and front o/s wheel / disc and oil type fluid everywhere and dripping from caliper so I assume it's brake fluid. I can only assume it's coincidence but I've often thought my def has had some kind of electronic / electrical issue with the brakes which as we know links into the ecm and hence the cause of poor running - well hey presto was running sweet as a nut this morning.....even the rumble sound that is usually associated with the hand brake when slowing down seemed to have gone?????? DONT DRIVE IT
good chance you damaged a seal when fitting pads guessing as you pushed one piston in the other came out to far ! new caliper needed then and new set of pads because fluid will have soaked in to new ones already fitted and give the hub and disc a good wash off with traffic film remover , don't bother trying to clean it off with proper brake cleaner good wash ( you cant wash it too much give it a few goes ) with tfr and then water hose let it dry then final rinse with brake cleaner don't forget that brake fluid WILL be damaging the paint on the wheel Last edited by munch90 on 9th Jan 2015 9:22am. much90 disappointly I suspect you're bang on. albeit I'm a little surprised as I was conscious of that happening and since the pads were only half worn I'm surprised that any of the piston would have come out very far?
I need to go of and do a search now as someone mentioned a stainless steel piston kit which is rather appealing. Off to garage tomorrow and would be good to have the parts needed before then? |

really in future you need to push the pad back as this will push both pistons back together
guessing you have pulled both old pads out then pushed pistons back , should really leave one pad in to stop pistons comimg out to far I replaced all my pistons with stainless ones |

Steve is that a polite way of saying I shouldn't be doing it?
Or simply to ensure whoever is doing it for me is competent? I've got a top guy on the job so no concerns there Hopefully back on the road later today with new caliper.....i did suggest putting one of the back ones on the front as the fronts do most of the braking but got an unusual look back - think it was his way of suggesting it might be better in the long run just to get a new now? |

If the person you are using is competent and knows Defenders I'd take his advice but for you, your family and other road users sake it might be an idea to get any other braking components that you have tinkered with checked as well. I was taught to replace calipers in axle pairs meaning not replace just one side. Steve.

Yeah if you are going to change anything to do with brakes it must be done in pairs.
There was a bloke in a 110 killed his kids because of odd calipers. Please be careful. |
