Defender dashboard dial lights
The backlight for the fuel dial has packed up. So question time:

What type/rating of bulb are they ?
Has anyone changed these to LED bulbs and if so what colour works best? White(like standard) or other colours? 1999 Defender TD5 110

They are 509T bulbs, weird looking things. You will need a stiff pair of tweezers to remove them. They twist-lock in place if I remember rightly.

LED ones make no difference, as the light is put through a green filter anyway. Ask me how I know Embarassed

Actually the lighting for the fuel gauge is not a 509T bulb, these are only used in the speedometer head (two of them in there).

The lighting for the other gauges (and the heater controls) is by smaller 1.2W 'wedge' bulb. Usually referred to under a reference of 286. Available at all decent motor factors, online (VWP etc.) and even in Halfords I believe.

That'll teach me not to read the thread title properly Embarassed

However I remember watching that Aussie video, and IIRC he is doing it to a much older vehicle in which the dials are lit differently. Therefore it doesn't really work on later vehicles.

Yes, Td5 dials are already fantastically illuminated and any addition of LED lighting is rather pointless as pointed out above.

This the reason so many people (myself included) fit the Td5 instrument cluster to earlier vehicles.

Just out of interest does anyone know how to change the speedo bulbs on a TD5 ? as have one that's gone. I have a spare instrument cluster knocking about and is completely different to the earlier type. Is there a tool or something to reach down onto the back of the bulb ?

See the link in my first post above, there's some photos of the process on there.

Basically you want a pair of tweezers for the job, very easy otherwise.

Okay, yes, sorry did not see link, however:

I actually found a much easier way to do it. Using my £10 Halfords socket set. I found the 11/32" socket on the screwdriver attachment works well, and is much quicker and less fiddly, holds it perfectly. Very quick and easy to replace it again too.

Found it easier still,

Just took the speedo to the dealer, asked for new bulbs, they removed the old ones and fitted new ones whilst I waited.(About 1 minute with their long nosed pliers).

Eventually got around to sorting this and went for a T5-286 LED bulb. Early thoughts, I think the LED bulb is much better than before, so I also changed the temp gauge bulb as well.. Just the clock and the speedo ones to change 1999 Defender TD5 110

handy to know they fit ok.

My temp gauge light has a habbit of not working every time, so I was going to replace them all with brighter versions while I'm in there anyway
