Installing stereo from scratch
I've just recently collected my 2013 2.2 Puma 90 which had no stereo installed. I pulled the dash off yesterday and found this taped (with the aerial lead) to a metal upright towards the back of the dash.

I assume this means I have the loom and can plug this into the back of the head unit which I believe had the corresponding socket (it arrives next week).

I would appreciate help/advice on two aspects of this install:

1 - I have popped the speaker grilles off in the footwells and there are no speakers and no obvious connectors. If I have the loom, will I also have the speaker connectors? If so, what am I looking for?

2 - As there was no stereo installed - just a blanking plate, there is no cage to slide the new h/u into. Any ideas what I secure a cage to behind the dash to stop the whole lot slumping down behind the heater controls?

Any advice on installs would be much appreciated. I am not into ICE in a big way - no subs, amps etc - just plain and simple h/u and speakers under the dash.

Thanks, Phil

Oooh - Lots of pretty coloured lines....

So I am looking at page 51 and this tells me the colour of the wires I need to look for - right?

I will go and have another look under the dash and see what I find!

Any help on the cradle would be much appreciated or even better - some photos of how they do it on a factory fit! Very Happy

A standard DIN cage where you bend the tabs out is fine. Many head units you will get the cage with the unit. Factory unit is different. Depends what unit you are fitting, but the connector should fit or with Alpine you can get an adaptor connector.

Any half decent automotive/ice provider will sell them. Halfords do 'em too. Laughing If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

What head unit are you fitting?

If not the original, then you will need an adapter loom as per http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic29061.html  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I have gone for an ALPINE IDA-X305S.

This is a pic of the back so any help with connectors I need to buy would be appreciated

The help with the connector is already in the last post of the thread Martin linked to. Thumbs Up

Just go on E-Bay and search for the item mentioned. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

As above, the HU would have its own dedicated style male plug into the rear. (No pun intended Whistle Rolling with laughter )
From this it would go to a female ISO connector which is aftermarket standard.
As the link mentions in a 2012 onwards Defender you then need an adaptor from the LR plug to a pair of male ISO connectors.
That's it, aerial is a standardised item which will plug straight in.
The factory HU requires no single DIN cage hence why one isn't present due to its design.
Aftermarket HU's however do require one and often come with one, if not they are easy to purchase.
Ideally you want an Alpine branded cage for best fit rather than universal, that's what I'd recommend anyway.
Other info I.e. Speaker wire locations and sizes etc are most likely on K9's link, anything else available here already via the search function.

Thumbs Up

Thanks guys - I think I have all I need.

I have ordered the PC2-117-4 harness adaptor for 2013 onwards. It does come with the cage so will have a look at how to install when it arrives and I will get outside and have a nose about at speakers wires!
