Big yes for the air heaters, my Eberspacher was in action this morning. Flicked it on 10 minutes before taking the boy to school and had clear windows and a warm motor. I then had to switch it off 10 minutes into the journey as the engine heater was working well by then.

What one have you got?

Not sure which model-it was already fitted to my 110 SV but it sits just behind the bulkhead, diesel powered and blows either out under the seats or flick the vent to the back when camping.

A cheaper alternative is a Kenlowe hot start, this is a mains powered coolant heater and pump,I once had one in a previous defender and ran it off of a timer so the engine was pre warmed when I got in the car in the morning, the down side is that it is no use if you're away from base. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Anyone fitted a water heater like some vauxhalls or renaults have that fits in the heater pipe and use diesel glow plugs in water , seems could be easy to do

I have had thoughts about improving the heater in my Td5 but tend to forget about it all summer ! Have thought about lagging the heater box itself to prevent it being cooled by the blast of cold air coming in between the bonnet and wing and have looked at the feasibility of blocking off the fresh air intake and rigging up a piece of trunking to take warm air from the rear of the radiator possibly making a hole in the shroud to connect it to, to have pre heated air going into the heater box.

Insulated the heater box, bubble radiator foil stuff and camping mat, the water pipes 28mm pipe insulation(it was almost a perfect fit), to and from the engine,10mm foam draft excluders down each wing,10mm latex backed felt glued to the bonnet. It made a noticable difference,I notice hea.....warmth coming thru the vents after a mile or so.

Tbh,It warms up pretty much as quick as any car I've had,but it also stays warm whilst you go shopping, I've also closed off the cab behind the drivers seat with radiator foil stuff covering the dog guard, which is about the best thing you can do.
Interestingly, the engine doesn't warm up noticeably quicker on the hottest of summer days either.
I wouldn't want my air intake coming from the engine bay in case of any exhaust/fuel leaks.

This is my auxiliary "pre-start" heater, lol, gets rid of all ice, moisture in less than 5 minutes, ftw Cool !
Just flick the switch in the hall before I go out.

Plenty of things to think about and Improve then!

Im I right in thinking that there are 3 stages to this heating system.

1, A pre radiator and pre heater matrix water circuit, that is water that gets pumped around the engine block only
The engine being the only method of heating this water.

2, water that gets pumped around the heater matrix when heat is selected.

3, and the water that when the thermostat opens, let's the cooling water flow though the radiator.

I've been looking at Webasto Thermo top c heaters and found this site;

http://www.carheaters.eu/

Has anyone had any dealings with them? I know that they are registered in Poland, but appear to be based in Cheltenham.

Thanx in advance
