To the best of my knowledge there is no such thing as a "heavy duty axle". Some 110 and 130 models have HD suspension giving them a GVW of 3500kg rather than the standard GVW of 3040kg, however the axles are exactly the same and only the springs differ. There has never been a standard Landrover with a GVW in excess of 3500kg, and if there was one it would cause enormous complications with respect to vehicle classification, driver licencing, Operator Licencing, etc.
Similarly there is no such thing as an axle rated at 3500kg, since standard axles when used with the appropriate suspension allow a GVW of 3500kg. Military axles are reinforced but the reinforcement does not alter the max. permissible axle load nor the GVW. The genuine "Wolf" steel wheel is believed to be rated at 2200kg per wheel, but although this figure is widely circulated it seems that it is impossible to trace any definitive source for this. It is however the strongest wheel available off-the-shelf to fit a Defender, and LR has stated that the Wolf wheel shod with 7.50 Michelin XZL is the strongest wheel and tyre combination supplied. This thread has drifted a long way from the OPs question and seems to have lost the plot! The actual load rating of the Wolf wheel is not (as stated on page 4) "the million dollar question", it is really irrelevant, since the limiting factor is firstly the law and secondly the chassis and suspension. You will be illegal long before anything breaks, and the wheel is likely to last longer that the rest of the vehicle. |

I think the point about the interest in the load rating of the Wolf Wheels, is that it gives an indication of inbuilt strength and not the intention for many of us to load the vehicle up to max weight - plus who wants a fake.
Mine is used off road every week, over very muddy and rocky terrain whilst heavily loaded - the Wolf's are strong enough to take this use - especially where rims can be caught by rocks etc, which would destroy and deform lesser wheels. Anybody who has not examined a genuine Wolf will be stunned by the steel thickness and inherent strength of these wheels, its been said before - the military use them as they are virtually bomb proof. If I wanted another set, I would be buying Genuine LR items off Dan at that price, the peace of mind is worth a couple of extra quid over unknown suppliers Last edited by Grouse on 23rd Oct 2014 3:52pm. ^^ And as if I do not know. In two weeks I have to lift all four of them with the Nokians installed as additional weight into the rear of my truck to take them to the dealer who will mount them on my truck for the winter... Each of those 4 is heavy as h€ll.

Only guessing but it does seems reasonable that this figure follows on from the highest rated maximum axle weight for a LR being 2,200kg. In a cross axled situation when one wheel is lifted off the ground then this full weight would be on the other single wheel. Thus each wheel is designed to this limit and rated accordingly. I'll check mine over the weekend, as I would almost expect there to be a stamping to show this somewhere. Seem to think other LR alloys I've had, have had a kg loading stamped/moulded into them. Eric - can you weigh one - interested to see how it stacks up against mine posted earlier. |

Had my new Genuine steel wheels delivered by Dan (duckworths) very pleased with them heavy duty and much better then the bearmac alternatives I looked at, there really is a huge difference from genuine and the £40 offerings, I have had a really good look around and checked a lot of alternatives , off to paint tomorrow black ral 9005. The extra discount was also appreciated Thanks Dan

I thought earlier Salisbury axles had a HD version that had additional welding on the inside of the casings? There was the Standard Salisbury which came with "light duty" 110's for Station Wagons and Pick Ups and then the HD Salisbury which had extra welds and thicker innards for the "Heavy Duty" 110's like Hard tops and High Caps and some Station Wagons. The innards were exactly the same but the casing was different. This might be where the confusion has creeped in from earlier models which haven't been produced for years Not going to be a option for late Td5 onwards vehicles but I have a feeling my Salisbury was a HD version will have a look next week when its all apart. |

Exactly 34.5 kilo or 76 lbs. One Land Rover Wolf wheel with a Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT 235/85R16 on it. Eric You never actually own a Defender. Eric - thanks.
That seems entirely consistent with my brand new HD wheel fitted with Goodyear Wrangler MT/R LT 235/85R16 - total weight of 35.4kg. |

^^ Yes, my Nokians have already done an estimated 25k km by now. So that is 900 gram/tire less from thread loss. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.
