I finally got some copies from my local independent garage, I've had genuine ones, and To be honest, the copies also weigh a ton and personally, I can't tell the difference. I've got them on the 300 90 at the mo, with 255 85 16 km2. I'm very pleased with them.

Are those nuts correct on those studs? Looks like the studs are too short? 2002 110 TD5 White

Good question . These stainless nuts are exactly same size and number of threads as the steel ones that have always been used . Yes there Are 3 threads still showing but the nuts are secure and proper done up . The bolts are correct as manufacturer fits them . I'll let you know if I see a landrover wheel overtake me this weekend as I travel Down the motorway Whistle

Don't worry, it won't. There are many thousands of Land Rovers across the world with HD wheels fitted like this (mine included) and they don't drop wheels off for a living.

Land Rover fit them like this, with spare threads showing on the nut, out of the factory so that's good enough for me. You can buy extended studs if you want, but it's simply not necessary.

Longer studs, as you'll see on a 110, have a line across the end of them.

In ALRC rules, if you don't have these studs on a heavy duty wheel, like Mach 5's (as this was their original intended purpose) for example, it was a scrutineer 'fail'.

255/85 is the tallest and widest. You used to be able to get 100% profile tyres that would fit but they seem to have gone by the wayside.

235/85 is the most easily available.

I have the line across the the end of mine on a 110 with HD steel wheels but i didn't think they were longer than standard studs - they don't look like it:

My point on raising this issue is that is does not look like "correct engineering design" to have 2 to 3 threads on a nut still showing when it goes onto a stud. I am sure there would be some weakness here otherwise the nut could be shorter. Confused 2002 110 TD5 White

There are advantages in this application if the nut overhangs the stud, and a well-designed set-up will always be like this. Early Land-Rovers (Series Ones and 2s) were specifically designed this way. The nut protects the stud from dirt and damage, and ensures that the nuts can be removed from the studs when needed.

If the stud protrudes through the nut there is a risk that the end of the stud becomes damaged in which case the nuts cannot be removed.

Provided that there is sufficient engagement there is absolutely no problem, and LR obviously considered that there is sufficient engagement since this is how vehicles leave the factory.

The early wheelnuts were double-faced with a chamfer on both sides, making them reversible. I have on more than one occasion had the (very young) local MOT examiner tell me that my nuts are reversed on my Series Ones because he's seen the chamfer and assumes that it's only on the outboard end of the nut!

Also alot of confusion comes with regards to longer studs and older Land Rovers.

ALL Defenders as standard have 39mm long wheel studs.

Where the confusion comes from is the Heavy duty chassis and Wolf chassis which use a longer wheel stud which is 59mm long.

When land rover dropped the Heavy duty chassis it carried on using the shorter 39mm studs for everything because they were a lot more common in production.

Therefore it meant that the "wolf style" XD wheel was then mounted using the standard 39mm Stud.

If you have a defender with a Heavy Duty Chassis then you will probably have longer 59mm studs.

It is very very unlikely that you have a 90 fitted with the longer studs because 90's never had them fited (as standard)

As will everything the above is open to exceptions as your vehicles previous owner may have changed it.

If you really want to change it you can,Longer stud part number is FRC7577 and it will cost you £21.58 each ( Shocked ) Or you can stick with what you have.
