I then hit a snag trying to get things lined back up to get the bolts in, anyway with a bit of jiggery pokery im all done. Im sure itll be much faster next time round... I'll keep you posted with how i get on, got a few hundred mile journey tomorrow so it will get a good run in Puma 2.2 90 Stationwagon |

While fitting a blank - Is it worth taking out the EGR valve complete and cleaning the internals of soot etc if one suspects it to be faulty - is it a complex type job?

Cape,
I did consider doing mine sometime ago and was going to use brake cleaner to do it! I don't think the job is too complex! My EGR stuck before I had chance to clean it and was swapped under warranty so I never got round to it! If you're out of warranty and don't have a dealer on your doorstep it is well worth doing in my humble opinion! PS Caned my Defender a bit today on the motorway for about 150 miles and on this latest tankfull still got 28.5 mpg on a 14mm blank. Used to get about 23mpg on motorway driving on average! Thanks K9F - I did find your post on the search but saw you never got to it. I have a slight flat spot and a bit of smoke at 1900r/min but at this stage only on colder days - as we are doing 3 weeks in Namibia next Saturday, I will sure be far from any dealers so may end up having to do it at the side of a very lonely road if it get's really bad. Would the blanking plate with 19mm hole hide the symptoms of a faulty EGR valve? |

no - just concerned of being stuck and letting down our travel companions at the side of the dust. If it's a quick fix to get going - no problem

Fekete,
It purely depends on individual vehicle circumstances and what is and isn't standard that decides what you can 'get away with!' I would say someone who has a performance air filter, snorkel, upgraded intercooler and exhaust would be likely to get away with a much smaller orifice in his blanking plate than someone who is running as standard! Robofarmer was running with an 8mm one with no problems (see page 1). Smallest we got is 10mm so he wins! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Karlos,
Even Robo recommends a month's trial fit each time! What's the rush? I've got second service booked 6 July - 12mm will go on after that! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Karlos,
I thought it was running 'sweet as' on a standard tune? If so how can the problem be attributed to needing a smaller blank? Have a word with Pete at BAS he'll put you right! It could be related and down to this which was reported by Autologic on the answer I got from them about the recent Q068 anomolies on this thread.... http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic3243.html?highlight=autologic "Misfiring at high load - *Again, this has been intermittently reported. I believe that the vehicles that have been misfiring are possibly overboosting or their mass airflow is going out of range."
