It's most likely your light switch in the steering column - the contacts are easy to see and test with the plastic shroud removed. My blog - www.anacreinhampshire.blogspot.co.uk

Thanks SiWhite
Just a quick question: When I turn the ligth switch in the dipped ligth position the position ligths turned on but not the dipped ligth. Are connected to other circuit inside the switch? I check the connections of the main ligth switch wires: 3 --> red-blue-brown. Brown is always live. In dip position red going live and in main beam position both, red and blue going live. Its that OK? Cheers! Eduardo MY 2007 110 SW PUMA 2.4: Big Fog of 64' MY 1994 Jayco 1207 Folding camper: "El Tremendo" Click image to enlarge |

Yes, seems right. Try to connect the wires outside the switch and see if there is light
Most of the time the switch looks right but the plastic piece where the contacts live melt and then the switch is faulty. A useful modification is to use relays to switch the lights, so there is less currrent going through the contacts in the switch. See this topic over here. More info from various members who did the mod...
http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic26097....light+loom Some used the Dutch harness (easy but expensive) and some made their own. Anything is a good idea over stock Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Did you do a lot of towing lately? The current to the trailer lights is an additional load for the switch. The relay loom is really a first class modification! maybe worth checking the dip/main indicator switch as well
the light switch ( the short one on the column ) feeds the main/dip indicator switch ( the long one ) maybe contact on there burnt can't be the light switch as you would lose dip and main so must be down stream of the light switch light switch ( short one ) feeds sidelights (first postion )direct off switch , dip and main ( second position ) on switch feed to the main/dip indicator switch then to lights |

New ligth switch changed and no improvement
Relay already checked and it is OK (at least for the main beam) Bulbs also has been checked and are OK As Munch said, probably the dip/main indicator switch is burned . Any idea of how to check it and how its work? Just one question... It is necessary remove the streering wheel to take out it? yes the dip/main/ indicator switch is mounted on metal plate that fits over the steering column , if you take the switch off the plate I think your find springs and bits drop out and you got the indicator cancel ring round the column anyway .
but you could just plug the new switch in first just to check rather then fit it straight away you say you checked the relay , what relay ? as far as I know there is no relay or are you talking about dim dip control unit ? or have you fitted the relay upgrade loom ? |

There is a relay - it is ignition energised and has the function of shutting off the headlights if the engine is switshed off.
If it malfunctions you will have neither dip nor main beams. |
