Transfer Box Oil
I've just got myself an '08 110 DCPU which I'm going to service. I have a copy of the workshop manual but mysteriously it doesn't specify what type or quantity of oil I need for the transfer box. Does anyone have the details to hand?

Thanks,

Phil.

Fill it up till its coming out the top filler plug.

About 2.8ish liters. I usually buy 3 bottles from halfords and then have some spare to top up the axles Thumbs Up

Halfords has EP80W/90 GL-4 and GL-5: which one should I use?

Thanks,

Phil.

put your details into their, will give the right quantities and grades.

As for the PUMA box, I'm pretty sure I've read that you shouldn't fill to the filler plug level like you do with the older trucks, so be careful

Ah, so Comma recommends GL-4 for the axles and SX75W-90 GL-5 for the transfer box. I don't know the difference between GL-4 and GL-5 oils so I don't understand the significance. Why on earth doesn't Land Rover specify this in the workshop manual?

On the quantity point, I know the main gearbox isn't 'fill to level of plug' (it's 2.4ltrs dry and 2.2ltrs refill). The post above suggests the transfer box is 'fill to level of plug'.

AFAIK if there are bronze bushes in the diffs GL5 will eat them, whereas the GL4 won't. The SX75 is a synthetic I think. The use of GL4 or 5 is well debated when it comes to LR.

Refill to the level plug (2.4 litres). I used Fuchs Titan Race SYN 5 75W-90 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil (was Silkolene SYN 5 75w-90) - this one's GL5.

Tightening Torques:
Transfer Box Filler: 30nm
Transfer Box Drain Plug: 30nm.

Manual says "API GL4 or GL5, MIL-L-2105 or MIL-L-2105B" Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Martin, hello, I just found another very helpful post by you about this. I copied your list of oils and checked the Opie website:

Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 A1 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil – 8 Litres
Castrol Axle EPX 80W-90 – 5 Litres
Fuchs Titan Race SYN 5 75W-90 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil – 3 Litres (Transfer Box, needs 2.3l)
Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90 Fully Synthetic MTF – 3 Litres (Gearbox needs 2.4l)

It comes to £167.82, can that be right?

My copy of the workshop manual does not contain any information about the type or quantity of oil required for the transfer box. I saw a post by Martin which (I think) explains that the transfer box is to be filled to the level of the plug and that takes about 2.4ltrs.

In relation to the main gearbox, the workshop manual says capacity is 2.4ltrs from dry and 2.2ltrs refill. The main gearbox is to be filled or refilled with a measured quantity, not simply to the level of the plug.
