Turbo - exhaust fumes
Can a turbo leak exhaust fumes? I definate leak coming from around the turbo and it's not the manifold to turbo or turbo to cat joints.

Driving me mad and a little smelly (not me) 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

Is there any obvious soot deposits?

Are you positive it's not from the manifold? Have you run your finger all the way under to check for soot?

I'll take it apart tomorrow and have a closer look .. there looks like soot up the back of the turbo but could possible be coming from the manifold. I changed to a copper nakatenga gasket to solve a whistle some time ago. .. perhaps its reoccuring

.. ZeDefender . is this all sounding familiar (!) 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

Yes - rather too similar Sad
I fitted a new Nak gasket a few months ago to cope with the new turbo - I will NOT be happy if it starts leaking again... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Think mines leaking in the same place. But I'm in denial, it's not happening. Everything is great. Whistle Whistle

Found the problem .. Leaking from the turbo to manifold join AGAIN. A nut had come loose and dropped off, which is surprising as they were really tight. The gasket was knackered. Going to fit with new gasket and some turbo sealant and tighten as much as I dare, potentially with some additional nuts to lock them on!

Sorry to hear that. Note the way the hole distorts outwards at the narrowest part? Its a design flaw - they all do that Rolling Eyes

I STRONGLY recommend you take the turbo off completely and check that the mating surfaces are absolutely flat (it's usually the turbo flange that's warped). If not, skim them (either professionally or with a sander, making sure no crap gets into the turbo). It's the only thing that worked for me - half-arsed doesn't work. Plus my indie gave me some HD studs and copper nuts which have stayed in. In the past, I tried to fix it with various gaskets, paste (best not to use this as the heat and pressure are tremendous) bolts and anti-slip washers and all failed miserably.
Good luck Thumbs Up

Ah .. Well just completed a potential half arsed repair. Cleaned up the faces, new gasket, paste, double nuts. If it goes (when) I'll get the turbo face skimmed .. Just haven't got time this weekend. Getting quite quick at removal and refitting now (!)

One question .. How do you take off the oil return pipe? From the bottom of the pipe and pull up? I can't see how to disconnect from the bottom of the turbo with it in place. 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

Undo clamp bolt in bottom of engine block, pull out pipe and the take pipe upwards. I also removed dipstick to make easier.

Are you sure the mounting studs in the manifold / turbo are tight, did you use new lock nuts.
And the old classic are the surfaces flat. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.
