The moment I turned the key and crept tentatively out of the workshop into the daylight was just magical!
I have spent a week driving her around already doing rattle and leak finding tests but for now I think she is cosmetically done. Just the Utility conversion to do when we get a gap in the weather long enough (I'm hopeful for June ) Though I am toying with the idea of some black wing top chequer plate. However while doing my usual weekend checks I have found my gearbox has used about half a litre of oil since her clutch change in September, which is a bit of a bother to say the least. No differently than any of the other ones I have posted :S
The page takes a while to load so may just need a second, otherwise have a look in my gallery they should be the last ones in the running restoration folder. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

Thanks Guys
I'm really pleased with the outcome. G-mack - why are you considering putting windows back in? I'm getting rid of mine because they leak, don't fit properly and rattle despite being siliconed shut! Plus I quite often have to carry things above the capping line which could roll through the window! Would be good to meet up though and compare notes! i prefer it with the van sides, but since we have a new family member
Click image to enlarge im having to re think how im going to progress with the defender. when we just had the one lab he would travel on passenger seat or at a push struggle on middle row seats. Click image to enlarge now we have 2 im going to have to make the back a nice space for them both to spend their time! now the big one is happiest travelling when he can watch the world go by!! he sits the whole journey looking out window! if im going to relegate him to the boot after 7 years of luxury up front i want to at least give him a view!! also with external grills can happily leave both windows open for them!! i know it sounds daft but our dogs are our family and mean everything to us! so we want to make it good for them in the boot.! i will probably end up installing some better quality masai windows apparently they dont rattle or leak!! Daww yes I like him
We have a dog too but he prefers to just lye down on his blanket and sleep until we get there, then use his helicopter tail to fly down. (though I don't have a picture here atm ) Its not daft at all, there needs are just as important (if not more) than our own. For me however I keep finding the windows being a hinderence or problem rather than a help hence the removal. Out of interest, are your utility panels 88" ones or csw ones which have been plated? My plan is to remove the side windows, sand back all the paint to bare metal then glue on the side skins, re rivet at the ends and then paint. Have even got the upright bit in the middle to glue in when its done! Silly thing is I have got a set of 88" panel sides ready to go on in my loft but they really need stripping down to bare metal and then painting. Plus the rivets are all the old style mushroom headed ones with different door strips which don't really look right on a defender. I'm still undecided because to remove the roof is such a faff with getting it re-sealed again it makes sense to just glue and plate over, alternatively if I lift the roof to change the sides out I can also swap the cappings and keep my original windows for later if need be. Sorry my bad, the second row door strips. If you look on a standard utility it doesn't have any extra material where it meets the door top.
On the 88" side I have there is an extra strip of metal there which seems to be something to do with the door rubber. Pics would be helpful I know but they are in the loft at home and I'm at work Nice Light btw Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

That's them!
Though looking at your ones they look far better condition than my ones. Humm, interesting my mind is now swinging more towards my 88" panels. How to get rid of nasty 1970's paint though Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

Not updated this in a while because have been very busy with work, then Christmas and then new years but today I had a gap so thought I'd update.
I managed to get a day off in the beginning of December and took the opportunity to remove the rear windows and convert my CSW into a USW - something I have wanted to do ever since I bought her! Was a fairly easy job to do, the windows come out easy enough with a drill and tug, then drill out the rivets on the corners of the panels. Then spread glue liberally on all surfaces and then tuck the top edge of the blanking plates under the roof to side seal and glue. While the glue is still going off, drill holes for the new rivets to go through and then rivet in place. Sadly I had picked up the wrong glue, and instead of going off in a hour, took 3 days to go off which was a bit of an issue but with careful use of sucker pads and some bungee cords on the inside to pull the panels onto the glue it all went off successfully. It was then given a coat of etch primer and Arles Blue which could be described as "agricultural rust proofing" at best. But spray painting from a rattle can outdoors in -5 and blowing a gale did not give the best results but will do until the summer comes. Fairly poor photos but taken tonight while waiting for the girlfriend to get out of work. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I'm quite happy with the outcome. The interior still needs some bits doing to it but this will be done in the next few weeks. Otherwise I have had a new battery fitted as the old one gave up the ghost and removed the headlining, installed some insulation and re-fitted, hopefully for the last time as I hate removing headlining!! I have ordered some new drive flanges as my existing ones are getting a bit slack and I'm trying to get rid of some of the drive chain clunks. One of them seems to have been getting worse recently which is if I stop at say a red light, on moving off it feels like the rear axle is overtaking the front axle and causing a judder while moving off. I suspect it to be play in the front axle because it is much more slack than the rear but trying to work logically I'm working in from drive flanges to prop flanges, to prop shafts, to differentials, to transfer box, to gearbox. Also while driving her around today I found if I change gear occasionally it sounds like the front prop is going "clack" when I engage the gear as if it is getting slack before the rear one and taking up drive with a clack rather than a smooth uptake like the rear axle. Ether way, will update with photos and how to's here as and when they emerge. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |
