Memory Map is a good one for off road as it can use Landranger OS maps. 2008 Defender 110 XS CSW

sorry to hijack the tread, I am looking for a gps system and it would be good to link it into the i pad, does the i pad need 3g and what options are best. Will mainly be used in France and Italy. (want to stay away from any mobile phone charges)
Any guidance would be good as I am in the dark on this one, but would rather use I pad as I have one and don't really want to buy a separate bit of kit unless it is necessary. pete |

For GPS on a iPad you need the 3G model - but you don't need a SIM Card.
I have a iPad Mini mounted using a RAM Mount on a suction mount - has never fallen off. I use Memory Map and have Tomtom for Wester Europe. 2013 Aintree Green 110 Station Wagon SX |

The 3G ones have built in GPS - which has proved excellent in my experience.

yep they do, the bad elf is an option if you dont have 3g ipad. and a very good option as you will still get a signal in very remote places. so if your an overlander the bad elf is probably a better system. im gonna get one as i lose my 3g gps quite a bit in some parts of northumberland! Mine is just a WiFi iPad only, so the bad elf thingy enables GPSusage then?
Does it give better Bluetooth options too? My phone has BT which is an oldish Samsung and I can't BT over photos from that which is a pain. The reason you need a 3G enabled iPad for built in GPS is that the radio chip has both 3G and GPS receivers in it.
You don't need to have a SIM in it to use use the GPS. If you have a WiFi only iPad then you'll need an external GPS. If it's a Bluetooth unit, then you'll need to jailbreak the iPad to be able to connect it. Cheers Simon |

Previous posters are correct it does need to be a 3G one for the GPS element to work. I have used memory map on ours in loads of areas of the uk with no mobile signal and it works perfectly. I would add though that you do need to make sure you have the correct maps loaded on it before you set off because if you are relying on downloading maps as you go you can come to grief. Abroad I have found apple maps better than google maps as they cache differently.
One thing I did discover recently was a wifi ipad won't have a clue where it is even if it is connected to a 3G router. Regards Barbara |
