Think it must have been wired up incorrectly. The actual trigger for the light coming on is the earth, in both instances. The live should be permanent, so somewhere, the live has been connected to an ignition switch. If it is connected straight to the back of the barrel, you probably have something else on permanently. 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

Is not this controlled by the Alarm ECU also? Cheers, Vincent

I'm sure you can alter the settings for the interior light via a diagnostics plug in, I know you can alter settings on a Td5 with a Nanocom.

The light works on/off manually without ignition

Been sugested meant to avoid farmers leaving door open and flattening the battery!! Although he/she can leave the lights on, no ignition required!!

The Nanocom is for the short description, a stand alone diagnostics box that plugs into the OBD(on board diagnostics) socket. I mentioned Nanocom as I have an older version which is more compatible with the Td5 and reads the Land Rover foibles of programming which some general OBD readers don't.
A trip to an independant LR garage would sort it for little money or put a post up here on the forum to see if someone local would be prepared to help you out for a beer token or two.

My driver's one has always been a bit dickey since new. My solution is to 'exercise' the switch on the door. Maybe a squirt with something would be better.

Have you tested it by touching the door switch wire manually to the earth of the body in a suitable area? If it still doesn't work then you know it's not the switches if you check them.
I'd also take out the fixture and check the earthing and for power.
It's permanently live and earth switched but there is an earth terminal on the back plate of the light and needs to be tightened well (within sensible reason)
Some good photos here https://www.defender2.net/gallery/thumbnai...amp;page=3
Bear in mind I have some connections there that are non standard however the black plug on the backing plate is the standard earthing I mention above.
There should also be a white plug with two wires one, permanent live the other permanent live from the alarm system.
If you say the light comes on manually that is working fine it's the alarm system / door switches that seem to be the issue.
You can check these connections all the same for voltage and the earth continuity from the earthing plug on the backing plate to the door switches to check for a wire break.
If it still doesn't work if you open any door then that's unlikely. No Guts, No Glory.

All works normally when ignition is on, so the circuit and switches all work. The light works without ignition. With the switch in the centre position the door switches do nada.Very frustrating Big Cry

Does the interior light dim before it goes out completely or is it either on or off?

Also remove the right side speaker next to the fusebox and have a look up the bulkhead for a green box with 2 plugs. It looks the same as the pic below but on the right side as the pic depicts a LH drive.

Thanks Lorryman
light dims and goes off{ when ignition on }
suppose I look for said green box...then what! Looked at obd readers but conclude that assuming I get a fault code I aint gonna be able to write a correction.
Carryin a torch every time I go out is doin my nut. A long shot may be suggesting the fault may be original and therefor warrantable Rolling with laughter

The presence of the green box (10AS), will help decide on whether or not a diagnostic tool will help in fixing your issue. Note the interior light settings in the 10AS settings page below, normal or smart.

Is there any possibility the live feed from the 10AS has been intercepted so to speak meaning it's ignition switched rather than from the AS?
There is certainly more than meets they eye to this, there is either a system fault a possible short or it's been fiddled with.
I've done quite a bit of work on the interior lighting system and never encountered an issue from the 10AS ever. No Guts, No Glory.
