Parts swap over
Hi

I'm going to be changing my v8 D1 for a 300tdi Defender quite soon. Will I be able to re-use the updated suspension and bumpers from my D1 on a Defender?

just re read your post, is this v8 D1 to 300tdi D1?

I assumed you meant swapping to a 300tdi defender 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

90 or 110/130?

90 and Discovery 1 have the same suspension setup so will be a straight swap Thumbs Up

If a 110 or 130, then you will have to get new rear suspension (the front is the same).

Bumpers- size wise it will be fine- but if you want to fit it you will have to change the brackets as the Defender mounts to the top/ bottom of the chassis rail where the discovery bolts through the sides (if that makes sense).

The suspension may physically fit (a 90 - it won't fit a 110) but is unlikely to be the right spec. A Defender 90 is a lot lighter than a Disco. Darren

Defender 90 is only about 200Kg lighter than a Discovery 1 (depending on spec) due to it's heavy chassis which is one of the reasons why most off-roaders are built on Discovery/ RR chassis. 99% of the companies out there will sell the same kit for a 90 as Discovery 1.

200kgs is more than 10% of the vehicle weight, which sounds like a lot to me. Plus, most of that extra weight is over the back axle, so whilst the front might be ok, the back of a 90 would be very harsh on Disco 1 springs. It'd work, but wouldn't be my choice. Darren

I agree with what you are saying but without knowing what springs are fitted to the Discovery you can't really decide (it might have soft off-road springs). I doubt it will make a huge difference, especially once you have added all recovery gear and any extras- tow hitch/ recovery points: 20-30Kg, full tank: 70-80Kg, recovery gear: 20-40Kg, water, spare fuel: 20Kg, gear, under vehicle protection.... you are straight away getting up to the same level as an empty Discovery.

I guess what I am saying is go for it- it takes about 1-2hrs to change a set of rear springs and shocks- Throw them on and then go from there.... if it is good then no money has been spent, rather than ordering a new set and then finding out the strength is about the same... Springs are also much more expensive outside UK.
