anybody get or had a vibration at this speed (52mph / 1750 rpm)?
under no load no problem but with light acceleration the vibration suddenly arrives - a bit like pins and needles. nothing major but frustrating after a while. (Mal - clearly I'm not referring to mine cos mine is now perfect) |

I don't know but going by the ride, visual and general noise I'd have thought they were about right.
have you experienced vibration at a particular speed with either under or over pressure? this is defo related to transmission or or exhaust. the engine sounds sweet but you can bring the vibration on with slight movements of throttle. no throttle and it goes. keeping speed constant and there's a slight vibration which increases slightly under gentle acceleration so in this case I'm 99% sure its not related to the tyres. that said it does feel similar to the vibration you can get on a slightly rough tarmac road surface. ? |

hmm.
may be your right but please excuse my sceptisism cos having been told they all do that more than once and then to have things fail I'm not convinced. I'm actually thinking these defenders aren't nearly and rough and ready as some would have you beleive ?? |

Dont discount wheel balance without having them checked ... 50 - 55 mph is the textbook speed for a out of balance tyre vibration. Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

Check for lost wheel balance weights on both the outer and inner rims of the wheels? Swop wheels around! Sounds very much like wheel balance vibration which would disappear if you went a little faster eg: 60mph. LANDYWATCH

tried going faster but the fuel ecomomy drops....
its gone by about 60 to be fair. DaveH - don't think its wheels cos its increases with engine load. ie the same speed with varyiing engine load varys the amount of vibration - I wouldn't have expected that to impact on the wheels. I think I need to start with looking at heat shield and prop / drum (not sure this could make any difference but I still have my suspicions about the egr (not because of the vibration but always doubted it - but I've always been before) - has anyone ever know the egr to cause a vibration at that sort of rpm ? thanks for the feedback. its nothing major but I'm sure its not right so would like to resolve before the warranty is up. the way I see it is it'll only get worse. I'd rather it get worse and LR pick up the bill than me. |

Hi Caterham, I have noticed you have not had much luck with your landy, thinking of things that can cause vibration, the obvious ones are prop shaft or their UJ's, wheels out of balance as already mentioned. Have you had any new brake discs lately? (or any new item on a driveshaft?) I once bought some supposedly top of the range aftermarket discs and pads and three months later after lots of wheel balancing etc eventually found out one of the discs had a faulty casting, which by the time I took it off was clearly visible as a fault line.
Probably way off the mark but just thought I'd mention it. Good luck, John. 2.2 90 XS 88" Series One Old Norton Minerva |

thanks John.
nothing in the brake department has been replaced. transmision wise extention shaft input shaft thing was replaced and the gearbox, but I'm confident these are now ok propshaft... hmmm. i did try and replace a grease nipple (was supplied the wrong one) that seems never to have been there or has decided to disappear (well I guess it is the holiday season after all). there didn't appear to be any excessive play in the uj's but then I'm no expert. perhaps this could be the problem. presumably if theres excessive play this would show up and an out of balance vibration because of it isolating ? |

Ujs will normally knock, i doubt its them causing the issue. are they hot after a drive?
wheel balancing gets my vote. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

wheel weights all in place (or at least they appear to be).
just noticed something that I've not done before but will be from now on in. when turning the engine off leaving the clutch depressed. engine stops and everything sounds and feels 'proper' nice. this leads me to wonder could there be an issue with the clutch and hence the vibration above ? (just a thought) - hight recommend you all try the clutch in when turning off - sweet. |
