Home > Maintenance & Modifications > Rear door replacement? 110 SW |

Some time ago I drove my 110 SW backwards against a pole. The rear door got bent and the spare wheel is now making it difficult to access the door handle. My dealer told me that the aluminium door cannot be pushed back into its original shape and needs to be replaced.
Is this true? Any suggestions? Hans http://www.orlaya.fr |

Aluminium by virtue of it's characteristics is not as malleable (flexible) as steel. Quite often aluminium is also laminated to add extra strength. It is also likely to crack when bending leaving you open to intergranular corrosion.
If as you say the dealer says it cannot be fixed and has to be swapped out you have nothing to lose taking it to an independant 'body shop' and getting a seperate 'expert' opinion. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

I was told it is alu. It feels like that anyway, but I'm no expert. Hans http://www.orlaya.fr |

I should have thought of the magnet! I'll try to find the 12/09 issue of Land Magazine, could be helpful, though I doubt if I'll be able to do it myself. A second hand door sounds like a good option. My Def will be in for P019 and Q068 next week, I'll ask my dealer about it. Hans http://www.orlaya.fr |

I just made the test, and to my great surprise, it seems all doors are now steel... The magnet applies on any place on the side or rear doors! Duh! Anybody confirms? |

You guys made me curious so I checked with a magnet and it sticks to the door indeed. So it must be steel (or an alloy with enough steel or iron in it to make magnets stick). I'll try to get it repaired and let you know. Hans http://www.orlaya.fr |

I have had the rear door card off and there is a fook off frame. It carries the spare so its pretty robust. Having said that. Take the spare and spare carrier off, take the door off and drive over it and flatten it out. PS you may want to take the glass out. Or take it to a body shop

I could ask my wife to iron it, but it looks more like a body shop job to me. Hans http://www.orlaya.fr |
