Possibly wiper motor park switch (common fault, £25 from LR),do the wipers sometimes stop mid-screen?

It does sound like the park switch, my first 90 did the same.

Easy job unless you've got air con. But as mentioned original part only. Very basic job.

Changed the wiper motor once on my Series , quite easily (rust apart) Here I have air con Will pop in LR tomorrow morning to see if it's available ! |

Do not worry. Even with A?C it is not difficult. I have just been through the entire wiper system replacing the wheel boxes, rack, gears, arms, spigot and park switch. All of it can be done without touching the A/C, only the centre dash, dash top and bits behind need to be moved.
Incidentally doing this has revolutionised the vehicle, best wipers I have ever had on a Defender. They do 90 degrees no more no less... |
