As I have mentioned I have been granted opportunity to get new tyres. I have looked at various patterns in the road end of the spectrum and have managed to confuse myself. I had option on a set of duelers but I was too slow. What I would like is a set that are good on road and that will also have good traction on grass. I don't need big gnarly things for mud as if the land is that wet I will be walking as the grass is far too valuable to dig up with a land rover after all sheep don't eat soil. Also I have become wary of super high milage tyres as they will have expired way before I have worn the tread off. I managed to scare myself to death when I looked at one of my xcl's ther was plenty of tread depth but huge cracking on the inside, I would never have been round the Highlands with it had I seen it. So on that basis I don't think I would get the best from bfg or Michelin. It would be different if I did 15k a year. So yeah a road tyre that works on green ice and doesn't last for 60 or 70k miles. Oh and size is 205r16.
Cheers. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon. |

Any of the at tyres, general, Pirelli, bf etc are great tyres, unless you have spikes on the tyres, all at tyres are not great on wet grass once it's clogged!

What do they wear like? I'm not discounting them but It seems daft to me to get tyres that I will not be able to wear out before the rubber is past it's best? I have been reading that most manufacturers think that 7 years old is enough for the tyres to start to degrade which is fine save for that is about the age of my current ones and they have 7mm of tread left and binning them seems like I have wasted money. If you see what I mean. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Lambert,
I've currently got a set of 205/80/16 Michelin Synchrone tyres sitting about waiting for a new home. I know they are excellent on road and OK up to a point off - they are by no means a mud tyre. One is brand new, the other 4 have only done a couple of thousand miles. If you are interested there is a photo in my gallery of them (just the tyres, not the rims too) - if you think they may be of any use to you, let me know. Cheers, Martin. 1996 300Tdi Defender 110 |

Thanks for the offer but like I said in my first post, they will be more tyre than I need, I just don't do the annual milage to justify such hard wearing tyres, the rubber will be stuffed before I have worn the tread off. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Many years ago I put a set of BFG All Terrains(the old Trackedge pattern) on my 110 that was my farm truck. That did everything, shepherding, towing anything from 250gal fuel bowsers, combine headers, Ifor stock and flat trailers to moving farm kit around. They did around 45k miles in two years with no punctures, never got stuck and being BFG they were only half worn when I sold the truck(moved jobs, next place provided a truck) If you want piece of mind and want to buy new then it might be worth having a look at the Insa Turbo version of the Track Edge.

Over on LR Scene, Monkeynuts has several sets of tyres fo sale, and one of them is a set of new take off 205 M&S, factory fit.
Plenty of farmers tend to trundle around on them AOK, nothing too agressive. |

Remoulded hmmm that might be worth a look. What were trackedges like in the wet and snow not that they can be worse than xcl's. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon. |

Ok seems that you can't get traction track in 205s pity. As to part worn I do look quite often and there's all sorts out there but it's a matter of what pattern is better suited to my needs not that I can't find any. Had similar with fast road tyres for my scooby got one set only to find out that there were better ones out there for what I was doing with the car. You know how it is. Sorry, I wasn't aware they were so limited on sizes. I had some again on my present 110, one of those ebay bargains, ran them fo 2 years then got a bit wary of 8 year old tyres with the amount of miles I do and most of them with my kids. Sold them to a mate for peanuts, he ran them a further 2 years and has just changed them, that's the first set of Track Edges I ever seen allmost worn out! They just seemed to cope with anything, ice, snow, bit of mud, rocks green ice, everything!

BFG ATs for grass IMO
You used to be able to buy cheap Colways - a remould in the style of a BFG. Ok, they don't last particularly long, but are certainly adequate. |
