Head unit and speaker upgrade.
G'day guys,

I have bought some goodies to upgrade the stereo in 'Ivy'. A Pioneer 8450BT head unit, Vibe lite air 4 components for the front, Vibe slick 6's for the rear and a Pioneer TS-WX110A active sub. I have also bought 2 bulk boxes of Stinger expert roadkill insulation to quieten her and keep the inside a bit cooler.

My question for you, who have been here before (I have looked but can't find a definite answer) is with my crossover for the front components. The factory setup has feed wires to the woofer from the main loom and also feed wires from the loom to the tweeters. when I wire my new crossover do I use the woofer connections and just leave the factory tweeter wires disconnected, I'm right with the new crossover output connections as there labelled Laughing

Or.....am I better to run the new crossover feed wires (as it is already wired with heavier wire, enough to reach the head unit) back directly to the head unit. I don' know if I really want to do this but if it is a better option I will.

Thanks

Mick

for the sub woofer i put in new wires after advice from an expert. Works very well and quite straightforward to fit. BM52

Thanks BM, yes I'm pretty right with the sub, I think, I haven't started the install yet, just nutting everything out before I do. The sub is all RCA connections to the rear of the head unit with a power feed to pick up.

Personally, having spent a considerable sum on the kit and going to the bother of installing sound insulation I would replace ALL of the cables, speaker and power with good quality ones

Are you saying new power to the head unit as well, or the separate power feed for the sub which I will be doing anyway.

Only my opinion, but I've taken new power and earth cables up to head unit (and amps) to ensure plenty of ampage and a good quality earth

Yep and I appreciate your opinion, its something to think about, I have to get the sub cable under the flooring and up to the dash anyhow.

I suppose I could leave all of the factory wiring in place as well just in case I decided to put back to stock if I sold the car, not likely at this stage though, but ya never know!!!!!

I used plastic convoluted tube with a screw on fitting each end (so totally sealed), a hole in battery box end and another in bulkhead to right of steering wheel. Infact I have three running from the bulkhead to various places. Perhaps a bit extreme but makes cable runs clean and easy

Do you mean from the battery box under the car into the engine bay then in through the bulkhead.

Keep up the good work. Thumbs Up Some pictures in my Gallery too that you may find useful although different people have different ways of doing the same thing. All with the same desired outcome though. Very Happy $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Thanks Steve. Funny you mentioned the gallery I hadn't even noticed it sitting up there Embarassed

I got a couple of more sheets on today, I'll just plod along in between other jobs Wink and get it done.

I was surprised when I removed the rear seats, 28kgs each......the rear lifted 10mm.

There's a whole gold mine of info on here to help you even by pictures alone. Although no two installs are the same. I would say mine (I'm going to say that aren't I Whistle ) and Go Beyond's installs are some of the best I've seen on here along with yours. I especially like how Go-beyond (Matt) has put in fuse boxes ect that he requires for various power feeds so it can all come from one place nice and neat instead of going back to the battery every time which will run out of room. And most importantly safely wired and fused too. Then again he did strip and re-fit nearly everything. My set up is about 70 - 80% complete but still got some bits to sort out.

Yes mate, your'e right about the quality of installs. That's why I haven't put mine in yet, I just haven't got my head into it properly as yet (the wiring side of it). Im running 2 projects at the moment, doing these things to 'Ivy' and I'm also doing a refurb on a boat. I go into the shed and intend to do 1 thing and end up doing bits on each.....its not conducive to getting things done in a timely manner I'm afraid.
