Firstly very sorry to all of you wanting an update but with a lack of the Land Rover recently and work being so busy I have not had time to put fingers to keys and update this story for you all. (Actually the only way I am doing it now is because I am currently on a train back to Devon from London leaving the Land Rover in central London. I am back there Monday and as it is summer holidays now and the M4/M5 or A303 will be a nightmare. The tickets are actually less than the diesel so win win win situation)
Right then where were we, ahh yes in France with the 90 having been recovered to a local recovery yard and me and my colleague running round France in a terrible Avis rental Hyundai i30 eco eurobox yuc!! We got some phone calls on the Tuesday from Land Rover Assistance saying that the 90 was not going to a French dealer as first thought but was going to be re-patriated with us on the Caen (Ouesterham) Portsmouth ferry on the Friday night, the plan was for us to drop the hire car off at Caen Train Station get a bus/taxi up to the port meet the recovery people at 22.00 for the 23.00 sailing, all sounded great but there was a few to many variables in the plan for my liking but hey ho not a lot we could do about it apart from trash the arse out of the Hyundai and drive it everywhere like we stole it. Friday dawned and we finished what we were doing in a small town called LaClayette in the Burgundy region at 12.00 midday and I have done this run before via Moulins and Le Mans and it takes about 7hrs. The phone started ringing about 14.00 with Land Rover assistance asking what time we could be at the port as the recovery agents did not want a late night and wanted to drop the 90 off earlier than later, so we told them 19.00 and we would then go back to Caen and drop the bag of (sorry lovely hire car back) Next phone call was from Enterprise this was to say did we really need a tow bar vehicle as they were having difficulty locating one for me, they only had since Monday to find one for Saturday so they were surposedly taking a Range Rover Sport to a dealer in Winchester to see if a Full Fat Range Rover tow bar would fit ?? and would ring me back later with the results, I knew this option was not going to work so was wondering what was going to happen next and what was going to be offered to me ?? Smart car, Renault Twingo ?? The next phone call was Land Rover Assistance again saying that the recovery was on its way and would be there by 18.00 so I reiterated that I would not be there until 19.00 so he would have to wait. I could see and smell a disaster looming but hey ho press on regardless. Another phone cal from Enterprise low and behold the tow bar did not fit and they aborted the hire and said they would give the contract to another company click hung up !! What ? Who ? Where ? ect. To be fair 5 mins later phone goes again hello this is CPL Accident Assistance you need a tow bar vehicle we can supply on Enterprise’s behalf a BMW X5 is that ok ? It would do can’t say I was over impressed but it was diesel wheels I could get my tools in and it had a tow bar so ticked most of the boxes for me and getting a bit late in the day I felt a bit backed into a corner. Quite a bossy girl on the phone wanting to know everything, I had to stop on a French motorway toll area scan the company insurance docs and my licence into an e-mail for her (how this could have been done pre-smart phones, laptops and international data roaming no idea) Any way next problem was the BMW was being delivered from Crawley and they could not get it to me until 09.30 and the ferry docked 07.00 great more standing around waiting. Next phone call Land Rover Assistance asking where we were as recovery agent was at the docks looking for us, it was now 17.30 and we were still 1 1/2Hrs away as we had already told them 3 times our best eta was going to be 19.00, he won’t wait and was going to unload and leave the keys with reception. (I recon he was on a Friday night promise). We got up to the port at 18.45 as it so happened and could not find the 90 any where asked reception no idea had someone dropped keys in ? No !! ect ect Great whats he done with that then. Phoned my office bring the tracker up and see where the 90 is please, yes it was in the docks right at the back in the freight depot, how he had got it there no one knew but every one had been told by him that there was nothing wrong with it and that it could be driven as he had on and off the transporter and round the port. I put my head in my hands dozzzy French man had been driving my pride and joy round with no oil pressure great !! Reported this to Land Rover Assistance stating that I was taking no responsibility for any damage caused by the recovery companys actions as I had turned it off the second the light had come on. (Subsequent interrogation of the tracker found that on 3 occasions it was moved during the week at the recovery yard each time the engine running for 2-3mins.) They did not seem bothered just reiterating what the recovery man had told the port and them that there was nothing wrong with it as it was just a faulty pressure switch yea right think not ! So utterly frustrated and f***ed off with the world we still had to get the pile of crap back, topped it up with fuel found a parking space at the main station in Caen and left the keys as requested by Avis with the Chef De Gare easy, got a nice taxi back to the port and went to the pub to it I needed a drink and some food. 22.00 we went to try and find the 90 met a very nice English man that seams to live out there and run the port for Brittany Ferries and he got us trough normal custom and then transferred us over to freight where the 90 was hiding and arranged for it to be towed on by one of the artic trailer tugs, he was also saying that he was amazed at how many Land Rovers and BMWs get recovered through the port at least 3 a week. All the artics and trilers went on and we were towed on a bar with the tug onto the back of the ferry. Went to the bar and bed. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Through customs ok and outside at the round a bout he dropped us off and off to Matfords the Land Rover went, we waited for the BMW to turn up. The BMW arrived on time 09.30 and we drove straight up to the Dunsfold Land Rover Collection open weekend show where we were un-ceremoniously made to park at the end of the field with the “other boxes” as the woman on the gate said. We had a good quick walk round the show only seeing “sparky lee” looking at the fire tenders the Dunsfold collection vehicles were very interesting and great to see but we just did a flying visit, dropped my colleague back home to Oxford and then went home to Devon to a chorus of laughs when I got home me being in a BMW everyone found that hilarious . Monday morning found me straight into Matfords to get some tools out as I knew I would not be seeing it for a while even the service staff who I know very well were laughing at the BMW they all said it did not suit me at all. Crammed the back full of tools and lifting tackle and off I went on my merry way. The next phone call was from Matfords to say yes engine was dead no oil pressure and damaged beyond repair exchange engine to be fitted and could they have the tracker printout of it being run and moved in France, that was easy printed out gps and vehicle status including when it went wrong showing I was doing 106 km/h in 6th gear just under 2000 revs. A couple of days later another call there were no engines available in the parts stock anywhere and they were going to pull one off the production line the following Wednesday. All sounding fine BMW working well apart from the aircon being u/s and the rear number plate falling off on the second day (and us Land Rover owners think its just us) The Friday I started to get phone calls from CPL saying they wanted their car back I said no I was in London going to Edinburgh and mine was not going to be back for at least another week plus, this she did not seem too be her problem just that the Enterprise contract for the week was up and she wanted her car back, before I even got the chance to make any phone call re this I was getting texts to both phones and e-mails from them saying I was entirely responsible for the extra rental and I was to surrender the vehicle ect ect very very officious. Loads of phone calls made all sorted and every thing calmed down life back to normal racing up and down the country putting cranes up and down. Roll on another couple of weeks Matfords ring saying nearly job done its up and running just a couple of outstanding parts on order I could have it back the end of the week. Here we go again nearly as soon as they were off the phone CPL were back on the car is off hired as off x we want it back you are responsible ect ect ect texts emals calls to my office as I did not answer my phone to them twice I was genuinely up a crane, bloody hell they are one very very officious company to deal with. As I was flying out to France that weekend and not going back to Devon it was arranged for the AA to bring it back to me, so the easiest thing was for me to drive out of London to Gatwick/Crawley take the BMW back to its depot where it came from and then wait for mine to arrive, better than try to arrange a meeting point for them to collect and the AA to deliver in a motorway services or a hotel car park that had problems written all over it. So turned up to CPLs depot, they are quite a big busy outfit loads of cars and vans in their compound 8 transporters to deliver and collect them. Waited for mine to turn up which it did a bit late but 1/2hr I can think of better things to get wound up about. Started it up backed it off and went to load up the tools. Left it ticking over and could not fail to notice a squeeking noise very quiet but defiantly a squeak. Drove gently round the M25 and up the M40 to my mum and dads where I got “spotted on here” and used his workshop to sort out my kit as I had just thrown everything in the back. Everything ship shape and tidy. Back down to Gatwick parked up in long stay flew to Toulouse to move a crane for a friends business. Click image to enlarge The Range Rover sport was a much much better place to be than the BMW so carried on with my work and Mrs No Worries loved it and now wants one instead of the P38 and I want a Disco4 don’t think we are going to see eye to eye on this one. Click image to enlarge Went into Matfords Monday morning to see what was going on and what the problem was, they had ordered a new power steering pump. Anyway told them I needed it back on Thursday re a towing job. And true to their word Wednesday phone call to say ready for collection and no chasing calls from Enterprise unlike CPL much nicer experience. Returned the Range Rover and they took me back to Matfords collected the 90 and it has been as good as gold ever since, looks like they have changed all the idlers and the fan hub. As for the new engine it has had a bit of a baptism of fire towing heavy all last week but the new engine is way way better than the old one must have been a pup since day one 10mph quicker up Telegraph hill stays in 6th towing better fuel consumption already and I seem to be a gear higher all the time in town ect 1st has become redundant apart from towing. Happy no worries for the time being [/b] If everything is under control you are not going fast enough. oil pump failure at the moment is the best guess even by the dealer the engine has not been fully stripped yet. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.
