Two axle breather queries
Hi

I've got a MY09 Puma 110 and as far as I can see the breather hose simply pushes into the axle breather, is this correct?

Also, what is the best way to check if the breather is blocked? Blowing air through the hose will obviously clear this, but how do you check the actual breather in the axle? Can it be removed and cleaned?

Many thanks

Mike

Simply remove the pipe and if it's clear it should be fine. AFAIK there is a special technique for removing the pipe as I have done it myself but forgot how to now. Neutral âï¸âï¸God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 âï¸âï¸

Disconnect the pipe from the axle. Check axle fitting is clear by probing with a piece of fence wire or similar. Check pipe by placing lips around pipe and blowing.

why do you think it might be blocked? blowing oil from a gasket/seal? Cheers

Yes, there's a little oil on the inside of the brake that can't have come from anywhere else. It was an MOT fail and so my free MOT (that came with my free service at the dealer) wasn't so free after all...

It's booked in to a local garage (dealer wanted £200 just to diagnose the problem) on Wednesday.

inner hub oil seal in the back of the disc. a pretty simple task to change, wheel off, caliper off, hub off, remove old seal and replace. that particular seal is unlikely to have gone due to a blocked breather. wheel bearings are ok i take it, no advisory on them? Cheers

No advisory on anything else - thanks for the brief description of what needs to be done!

One last question - to replace the inner hub oil seal do you need to take the half shaft out?

no

wheel off
caliper off
dust cap off
half shaft circlip off
drive member bolts out
remove drive member
hub nuts off (will either have one fit spacers with stake nuts or double nuts with locking tabs. fits latter on rebuild)
hub off

invert hub
change rear seal

refit as above in reverse

you can leave the drive member and shaft connected with the circlip and pull the lot, nothing in it really. Cheers
