Alive td5 remap
Well, I finally bit the bullet and on a trip back from Yorkshire, popped in to see Gary at Alive.

Why I didnt get round to doing this in 4 years of ownership I dont know.

Nothing too serious was in order, just a nice stage 1 remap and a check over.

Gary tweaked his map to suit my landy and my requirements, and on the 5 hour drive back home, all I can say is wow. Once I'd finished being a child, its just so much more relaxing to drive. It now feels its effortlessly cruising at 70-80mph, and for this reason so far I seem to be seeing slightly improved fuel economy. Also has tonnes of grunt for those 4th gear overtakes on country roads.

I couldnt be happier and I'm still grinning! Mr. Green

As for Gary and Alive, faultless service Thumbs Up

Hmmmm, sorely tempted. Might try to stop in on my way to/from Peterborough as its a bit far to go just for that. How long did it take to do? Mark S

Well, I'm sure you can appreciate it was far more than a case of simply plugging in and sticking a map on there.

After having a chat, a cuppa, test drive in standard form, checking she was in full health, then 3 or 4 runs tweaking the map another chat, a look round all the goodies, etc etc. I was out in a couple of hours. Gary really meant it when he said that when he quotes for the map, he'll be there for hours if that's what it takes for us to both be happy.

It really is worth doing, totally transformed, best way I can describe it is she's now far more car like. Less lag, more grunt, much more relaxed cruising. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

Just so I can plan how long I'd need to stop if I was getting it done. Have you had much of an increase in insurance premium? Mark S

What upgrade did you get? stage 1?

Actually, does anyone know what "stage1" and "stage2" actually refer to? because every tuners "tune" will be different.

Ok, stage 1 is usually 30~50bhp, but there doesn't seem to be any set values for it.

anyway, glad you're happy with your new-found performance Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Stage 1 seems to apply to just a remap, stage 2 usually involves going a bit further and adding an updated intercooler too.

I'm not fussed about exact figures, Gary was explaining that every engine will be slightly different, and then the tune is also different for different vehicles so its impossible to give an exact figure.

I'm very happy with it, however it's now highlighted that a set of discovery gears are probably in order. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

Yes, I got a "stage 1". Initially quite a mild well rounded map that we tweaked to give a little bit more in places, tested to ensure it remained smoke free. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

stage 1 appears to be 30-50 extra gee-gees as you say, but also tends to be maximum without fitting an intercooler. stage 2 will yield another 20+ ponies, but requires an intercooler Whistle

Insurance roughly £20-50 depending on your provider.

Remap costs
Can I be rude and ask how much your stage one re map cost, I'm considering the same, but have no real idea of the cost involved.
I do however like the sound of improved performance both at the top of the range but also at the lower torque end of the spectrum.
Thanks Dave I built a garage for my Mini
With a place for everything and everthing in its place.
Ten years down the line there's a Mini in there somewhere, and Censored all's where it should be!!!! Ho hum

Dave,I had my stage 1 done in Birnham Dunkeld last year, good job using autologic I think.he pointed out that the manifold had two sheared studs, which I dealt with using JE engineering kit. Cost of the remap was £ 315 I think. This did not include the egr removal, which I did this year

"More than simply a case of plugging in".....Absolutely the most important aspect, & the reason why you have such a good result.
I've got no time at all for those generic "chips"....because every engine IS different, & invariably it is the skilful & careful tuner himself that will get the best out of any remap.
At this stage, I don't know anyone in Melbourne who knows Landrovers well enough to do this.
Glad you got a good job.
Cheers, Pickles.
