That'll depend on the fuel gauge sender and if it's been bent or not and how it was wound, how good the earth is, how low resistance the chassis loom is etc.... They're not exactly precision pieces of kit and at best can only give a rough guide to the fuel level. I doubt very much if two senders from the same manufacturer will give exactly the same reading for the same fuel level.
On a TD5 the fuel level gauge and the low fuel warning light are both driven from a circuit built into the speedo. They aren't directly connected to the fuel tank sender at all, so in addition to the vagaries of the sender unit you are also subject to any additional tolerances around the speedo head's ADC conversion. Normally manufacturers try and give you around 50 miles notice. The only real way of finding out for your particular vehicle is to keep driving until you run out of fuel... http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |
