Nice one - it's worth me spending 10 mins investigating that one - thanks for the idea

That wouldn't surprise me for a big heavy Brownchurch style one but I would be surprised that taking off the tyers for more road bias ones. Have you checked the pressures? Try running it for a month and then have another look - a lot can influence your MPG. I had a week of really bad traffic jams on my commute to work and my MPG dropped from 33-34 to 26-27 which terrified me, but then sitting at 0 on tick over for ages will give you a cruddy mpg. it perked back up when I found a different route so its not permanent. Looks great by the way Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

Cheers Shaggydog, yes I'm quite happy with the way it's looking at the moment. First fuel up was with the XZLs fitted and no rack. Got 30mpg on that occasion. Fitted the Brownchurch rack (was still on the XZLs) and it dropped to 25 mpg. Now that I have fitted the Latitudes I am expecting a slightly better figure next time, but not by a great amount. I don't do a massive milage - 3k last year - so it's not going to cripple me losing a couple of mpg, but it's interesting to keep a record of what changes to the motor can affect the fuel figures. The rack is there to be used so I guess I'll need to live with the drop in economy, but if that was my main concern I wouldn't have bought a 90 As I said, if it looks like there will be a long period where I'm not using the rack I could lift it off for a bit.

Sounds entirely sensible and reasoned mate
I keep quite a good eye on mine as I average about 300 miles a week so I get through a fair amount of diesel a year! Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

Yesterday i removed the engine to sort out the power steer pump bracket holes on the timing case ( one smashed off and the other had stripped threads ) then set about making a flywheel locking tool so i could undo the damper bolt to remove the timing cover, plan is to clean up the face of the damaged hole then re-drill and tap to 10MM if the timing case is thick enough and locktite studs in Graham

Roddy your 90 looks fantastic in yellow
Met Pjh and son on sunday to collect a couple of bits, managed to get the cubby box fitted today as the old ones corners had worn through and mounted on some wood to raise it up. Gave it a wash and wax aswell |

SailingTom, thanks very much. It's getting a wee bit done every now and then, just to get it the way I am happy with it. New seats should arrive tomorrow, possibly fitted tomorrow evening - but my good Lady wife has ideas for me that involve a steamer and a paper scraper If the weather is decent I'll play on her good nature and tell her I need to get the seats fitted before the rain starts, but we'll see. I like the look of your 110, very purposeful. I had initially been looking for a LWB, but the wife suggested a 90 might be easier for her to drive. As I'm keen to get her to use it too my decision was easily swayed - but she's not yet sat in the driving seat Not to worry, I'm very happy with it, I suppose having the 90 with reduced space inside means that I need to keep it tidier

Sorted the power steer pump hole out on the engine, had to drill / tap the damaged hole to 12MM in the end as it was to far gone to go to 10MM then just drilled the stripped hole deeper and stayed at 8MM seems solid enough ( loctited them in aswell ) Graham

If your lucky Steven you may be able to undo the other ones bolts and then remove the water pump. Then heat it up with a blow lamp and then let it cool. Then try and get a good pair of Stiltons on it and wind it out, or if you have access to a welder, weld a nut on the end of it then gently try and and unwind it with a good fitting socket.
Failing that, buy a left handed drill bit no bigger than half the thickness smaller (ie if its a m8 bolt no bigger than 4mm) and drill into the center of the bolt - the heat will help crack it off and the the anticlockwise rotation will help wind it out. Just go carefully! Good luck! Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |
