Puma towing electrics
Have seen in the shop section here that we can buy a towing electrics adaptor to easily connect a C-tek charger to recharge the battery. Sounds a nice useful bit of kit, but my question is if the 7 pin towing electrics are always powered, so also when the car is off and locked? If that is not the case, won't be of much help of course. Below is the link to the item.
Tks, Eric

Remember this is a 7 pin 12S plug and not the standard 12N connector. The 12S is the caravan plug.

I am looking to upgrade to 13 pin which would make sense in Europe anyway.

Confused, and I must admit don't know the difference between an 7 pin 12N and 7 pin 12S socket. What comes as standard socket on a Puma? I know I have a standard 7 pin, which can be used for a trailer, but that's as far as my knowledge goes.
The website reads as follows though:
Quote
This is an adapter to enable you to connect a CTEK charger (12V, up to 15A rating) to the towing electrics. This allows you to charge a vehicle (Discovery 3, Discovery 4, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover, Freelander 2, Defender, Range Rover Evoque) through the towing socket. Fitted with a 15A fuse to protect the vehicle's wiring.
Both 12S 7 pin and 13 pin plugs are available, using quality plugs and genuine CTEK sockets....
Unquote
So it says that this adaptor allows to charge also a Defender....
Am I wrong in believing that the offered adaptor, i.e. the 12S 7 pin plug, would fit onto the standard Defender towing electrics socket?
And if it fits, would it possibly be a different wiring setup, so that the C-tek would not properly charge the battery via my standard socket?
Tks for clarifying, Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Eric

have a look at this site, shows the difference in wiring for 12S and 12N.

The 12S is as stated above an extra socket in addition to the 12N.

Bob, thanks for the link. Learned something again.
So the #3 earth is the same in both cases, but the #4 positive direct from battery exists only with the 12S, and does not exist at all with my 12N. So a no go regretfully. Pity, looked too easy.

Eric, you can add a 12S socket. It just plugs in I think. It's a dealer part LR005921.

This would be in addition to the 12N socket that is fitted with the tow pack.

Thanks for the tip, will check with my dealers. Have seen a few Defender pictures with one socket at each side of the tow bar, guess the second one must be this 12S socket. If it is really easy to plug in, might get it.

Really useful link - cheers - was just about to start cutting holes and so on to be able to wire my CTEK in, but this will work fine on both my LR's as they both have twin electrics. Thanks P

Just yesterday happened to order from my LR dealer the original LR 12S socket and wiring. Same time orderered from the website shop here the Ctek 7-pin connector. When all is installed will post some pictures. Thumbs Up You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

On Td5 the "purple" accessory socket wire is not connected within the plug on the end of the loom for the tow bar socket so has to be connected separately to enable 12S or 13 Pin function.

On Puma the purple wire is contained within the vehicle tow bar loom connector so if you buy the genuine LR 13 pin electrics kit you can plug straight in and have reverse function within the 13 pin electrics and permanent power via the purple cable.

The purple wire is normally fed via fuse 2 on the battery box fuse box under the seat.

The ignition/ fridge supply functions of the 13 pin will require additional wiring to work but if you are just looking at a method of charging that is neat this will achieve it.

If you have 12N electrics fitted (7 pin) and they are genuine LR they should just unplug and you can then connect 13 pin

Eric,

How did the dealership add the second socket? - is there an adapter that allows the vehicle tow bar loom to double up?

Thanks Smile
