I'm the kind of guy who'll drive on vapours (even though it's a bad idea in diesels) - i reckon with it filled up through the pipe to the brim 77 litres?

I used to have a petrol County 110 with a sill tank and a manual switch that I drained dry each time before switching to the main. I could never fit more than 56 litres in until I found a partuicular fuel station with "cheap " discount fuel. Managed to get 58 ltres in both times I went there. After that I didn't go back because I had a strong suspicion that their pump was inaccurate(most likely deliberately). It also made me wonder how common fiddling with the pump measuring system was in fuel stations. Seems an easy way to make money with very little chance of getting caught. Any chance your fuel station had a dodgy pump? |

Very much doubt it,, was a largish station, and they are pretty tight on weights and measures etc in this part of the world,, but you never know,, California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1 Main Brian James Trailer Dealer for South West UK |

Very unlikely. Fuel stations are heavily regulated here. I read something recently about this and the fuel flow rates are calibrated to some extraordinary level or accuracy - way more than we would ever care about. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

The tank capacity itself may be 75l but that doesn't include the filler neck and any fuel that's already in the system which may be a couple of extra litres. The odd thing is, shouldn't the vehicle have gone into limp mode when it was down to 5l? I think that's what the manual says should happen. There's a whole section explaining how the engine shuts down when fuel is very low to prevent damage from running dry. 2007 Defender 110 1970 Alfa Romeo 1750GTV |

Some days ago we filled the tank with 65 liters just few minutes after the fuel alarm start.
I thought that the diesel thermal expansion coeficient can explain certain differences between the measures but really as I see in the literature 0.00046/°F that is not quite much and can explain a little bit more than 1 lt of difference between 5°C to 30°C.
