Going from TD5 to Puma
Hi all

Considering buying a 2008 Defender 90. My last Defender was a 2002 TD5 that was fairly bog standard and I just wondered if it is very noticeable in the way the 2 models drive and handle. I guess that spares and service items are readily available and well priced on the Ford 2.4 Puma unit?

They drive very differently, I’d certainly advise a good test drive. I thought I would adjust to the tdci, thinking it must be better, it’s newer. But I never did like it. So went back to a Td5.

Bit more explanation……
I did buy a new 2.2 and used it for 18 months and 36k. Yes more refined in some ways, heater was excellent, its quieter, and 6 speed box was nice when heavy towing, but 1st is a waste of time if not. I just found it dull….. soulless.

And so I sold it, and brought another TD5 Whistle Mr. Green
There’s others who will disagree. Personal choice. As suggested have a good test drive

I’ve got a 2.4 Puma and desperate to try a TD5… love the sound as they drive bye something the Puma doesn’t Big Cry Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

Can't say anything about the 2.2, but I sold a TD5 in 2011 and bought a new 2.4, worst Land Rover decision I've ever made, should've re-chassised (if there's such a word, but you know what I mean) the TD5.

I do miss the sound of the TD5, compared to the dull Transit chug of the 2.4, but I've no regrets about my 2008 TDCi, at least not as far as the engine is concerned. With a remap and a few other tweaks around the edges, it's done everything I need as a daily drive for 14 years and 120,000 miles. There are plenty of ways in which the design vehicle isn't perfect, and even some ways in which the late model TD5 was better, but it still has all the requisite Landy character, I think.

I'm glad I bought before the additional complications which came with the 2.2 - but each to their own.

I can't see the parts market for the Puma-engined models ever being worse than for the TD5 era. There are plenty of bits common to every Transit van and taxi with that engine, and LR built a fair few Pumas too.

It is indeed personal choice, but the 6-speed box and improved heater/dash airflow is a big plus compared a late TD5 with AC.

Try before you buy!

Regarding the 1st gear being so low, is it not better to have it and don't use it rather than not have it and need it? Like wise with 6th.
Of course can argue that can use the transfer box, but try to shift the transfer case at any speed higher than almost 0 speed. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Thanks guys. Some interesting comments.

When I went from a 300Tdi to a TD5 I was very surprised at the difference in acceleration, reduction in cabin noise and the acceleration. The TD5 was just as easy to work on, despite all the warnings that a home mechanic wouldn’t be able to maintain a TD5 without putting it into the local garage for things you could fix yourself on a 300Tdi.

I’ll let you know how I get on.

The TD5 is a lovely engine, had one in my D2 and I loved it. I've now got a Puma 110 and love that as well, We just got back from overlanding to Morrocco and I can honestly say that engine did not miss a single beat, driving through France in a day at 75MPH through to driving through Wadi's where she off roaded all day in 54-degree heat. All this whilst towing a 1100Kg trailer.

I am in no way saying the Puma is better than the TD5, but it 'aint all that bad in my humble opinion.

We've had a few defenders, a 90 TD5, a 2.4 110 and a 2.2 90 again. Out of all them the Pumas were loads better for cruising at speed but so boring, the TD5 when it was with us we kept standard and found it to be more of the "typical defender" so a bit more noise and the obvious being high RPM pretty much everywhere.

I think the comfort of a Puma is nice because they have more insulation and a bit easier to deal with on the frostier mornings lol.

The point people make about the 6 speed box is lost on me, the final ratio between the R380 and the MT 82 isn't too dissimilar. Its the TC ratio that has the biggest impact on cruising speed. And for the ability to use 1st in the MT82 as a towing gear is most likely a decision made because of torque delivery of the 2.4/2's.???

I'd personally try and get my hands on a XS TD5 and have a 1.2 Ratio TC w/ a map. I don't think Pumas are worth the extra cash for a modern dashboard imo, if thats a concern of course.

Note: One thing I noticed with the Pumas was the massive amounts of backlash in the drivetrain. I can't put it down to a single component I personally think its a combination of a few. They were all new vehicles and the TD5 drove the nicest out of the lot in that regard.


Just my experience with the cars, not saying either is better or worse just different. Thumbs Up 4.0 V8 Defender 90

The above mirrors my experience. All the Tdci vehicles I’ve drive have had awful gear changes, horrendous backlash and clunking in the transmission from new. I also really dislike the cheap and nasty dashboard, and while the heater is more powerful the lack of dash vents is a big negative.

A late Td5 would be my preference in the situation. The best dash layout, a good level of comforts/luxuries, and improved doors. Indeed my 90 is built up as late Td5 spec in every respect apart from the engine and gearbox.

I prefer the Puma for the interior/dash etc. The TD5 is better for having choice of a jump seat. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.
