Trying to understand the gear stick rattle
We have a Oct 2011 110 UT which we bought new and had the SVX gear stick/diff levers fitted (from new), from about about 6 months old we would get occasional rattles but never when someone looked at it, so we left it.

A few months ago the rattle got worse and the lever felt more loose so it went to the local stealer who repacked it with grease and all was fine for a while (I now know this was a waste of time doing this).

But last week the lever became more loose and the rattling worse and more metallic, the local stealer said basically tough as the last visit was good will as the lever was not covered and a new lever was required.

Spoke to the vehicle supplier who said it was outside of their 12 month warranty on parts...fair comment but it had been reported at 6 months old, we have only done 6k miles to date and the SVX lever was an obscene price. He came back to me and said no prob they will replace it FOC but I would like to understand what the problem is as I understand it is not uncommon at all.

I'm told the plastic at the bottom of the shaft wears and the weights then make a noise, is this right, but at only 3k miles when it started ????.

The pic below shows what I think are the aluminium weights at the bottom of the unused shaft I have but I cant see how they could wear and make a metallic noise.

Could someone enlighten me please.

Mine rattles too but only really in 6th gear. I would have rectified it myself but due to lack of info on what to actually do with it to rectify the problem I have just lived with it. Would like to sort it if it's not too much of a faff so when people mention "glued the weights" that's pretty easy to understand but identifying what to actually do with it is a different matter. I assume they just vibrate against themselves / something and that causes the rattle noise? $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

My gear stick rattled when warm after about 50 miles on motorway. Cured by removing stick and using nylon cable ties to jam weights in place. Was told it was due to the plastic and metal expanding at different rates when heated. Noroblems since. Whistle LANDYWATCH

What purpose are the weights meant to serve in the first place? Other than being a PITA Laughing $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

i think they make for an easier gear shift, or maybe helpful if using the gear stick for self defense?! Thumbs Up NO ROAD..........EXCEPT FOR LANDROVER

The gear stick is plastic, hence light in weight. The weights are there to make it bottom heavy and so vibrate less. Most cars have very short gear sticks unlike the Defender. Anyway, that is my theory. Whistle LANDYWATCH

In mine the weights were loose in their carriers when hot. The noise, there was no significant vibration of the gear stick, could be stopped by gently pressing on the base of the stick through the gaiter. Thumbs Up LANDYWATCH

G'day Lads,

My 90 has developed a 'rattle' when in 5th and 6th gear mostly only when the engine is under load, not when coasting or cruising but put the foot down and it starts. This started at about 9500kms.

Its not overly loud but I can hear it and so has the wife, so I guess it is there as she can't hear most other noises Whistle . You can alleviate it to some extent by putting pressure on the gear knob either forward or back.

Mine isn't metallic though, the best way I can think of to describe it is it sounds like teeth chattering, is this the same sound you guys are referring to.

It was for me Cracka. Now ALL gone. It started on mine at about 7000 miles BUT only after an extended run when everything had warmed up and it was during warmer weather. LANDYWATCH

I am concerned as the noise is like 2 metal washers rattling together and the lever is quite floppy. 61 plate-110 USW......a bit pimped

Thanks WelshGas,

Can you or somebody else enlighten me as to how I go about doing this fix Smile

Do I need to remove the complete rubber floor mat around the tunnel or does the rubber gaiter pull up some how? I don't want to go busting and tearing at things blindly.

How do I remove the gear stick itself, or do I need to, to complete the fix.

Hope you don't mind the questions but it's easier to ask someone who has already done it.

Thanks in advance.

Mick.
