Wiper issue. Fixed!
Hi chaps

I've been having issues with my wipers for a while now,
It all started when one wheel box decided to seize solid, I took the dash out replaced both wheel boxes with genuine ones,
Greased everything, checked the motor/ drive cable, put it all back together and they worked perfectly but they would not park, only stopping wherever you switched them off.

Ok, new park switch ordered and fitted, still the same?
Thinking it may be a duff switch, I pulled the one from my series 3 which I know works,
Still the same?
Perhaps it was the relay? New one fitted, still the same?

So, I thought maybe it's the stalk? New stalk fitted, still the same... Big Cry

Yesterday I had the dash out again trying to find the problem, everything looks ok!
I must say I'm a bit stumped by this Neutral


I've got no intermittent wipers,
And wipers that don't park correctly?

Anyone got any bright ideas? Thumbs Up 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

If the problem only started at the time you overhauled all the mechanical bits, my first check would be that the park switch is operating correctly as the gear wheel in the motor gearbox rotates. If, for some reason, the plunger is not operating correctly as the cam passes, you will not get proper park operation.

Failure of the park switch, or incorrect operation of the park switch (it has mulitple contacts) can cause a range of odd symptoms, but generally if the wipers stop wherever you switch them off it suggests that the "run-to-park" contacts are not closed when the sweep is away from thepark position, and a failure to stop quickly suggests that the contacts which short out the motor winding to use back-EMF to brake the motor are not closing in the park position.

You can also get truly wierd results from the intermittent with a faulty park switch since the result rather depends on the duration of the pulse that the intermittent relay sends the potor to get it started. I have even known a park switch failure which cause the wipers to run continuously when the ignition was on, and be impossible to stop.

There are other components which couls cause your problems, but it seems more likely that it is something you disturbed that a completely non-related incidental fault. It is a Defender, though, so anything is possible........

I remeber doing one a few years back.

This might sound like waffle, but from memory there is a white plastic 'wedge' inside the wiper motor that is to do with the park. Basically it wears and doesn't open the contects.

Hopefully this is for the correct wiper motor and makes some sence.

Had very slow wipers on the Puma, sometimes they would only start with a hand tug. I pushed the rubber grommet type cover forward where the spindle exits the bulkhead. One of the spindles had rust on it. Some sanding with a bit of sandpaper and a squirt of WD40. I let it penetrate then switched them on. Worked O.K. I kept trying them at different speeds and adding more squirts of WD40. as they were moving. The amount of rusty WD40 running down the false vents was a sight to behold. I gave it a good wipe and added a drop of general purpose oil from an oil can. I oil them regularly now and have had no bother since 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I'm now going with a new motor!
I'm sure the problem lays with that, Dieselbeast you may be onto something there?

Everything else is wired, tested, and working as it should be,
The wipers did seize, which probably put considerable strain on the motor as it did not blow the fuse!
New one should be here today, so hope it will cure the problem?

Been a real headache this one...... Big Cry 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

After spending some more time on this I can confirm the problem to be the motor.
I found the circlip on the gear shaft had worn away,
This causes the shaft to drop back inside the motor housing, which in turn pulls the park switch contact back, so then the switch can't make contact.

The answer is to pull the shaft back out, and either take the slack out with a thicker washer, or in my case use a thicker circlip.
Everything back to normal, and all working a treat Very Happy

I reckon that my Defender must browse forums like this when I'm not watching, Thursday evening when picking the boy up from college I noticed a couple of strange stop/starts when the wipers were on intermittant then when I went out later they wouldn't stop when they were triggered on intermittant untill I turned the ignition off. Short journeys for the next couple of days so not too much hassle. Started ringing round yesterday to try t buy one off the shelf and ended up being disappointed, none of the motor factors had one, the one I usually use for bits were having trouble getting onto the Bearmach site and others couldn't find any even by doing sross referencing to the old Mini parts. The consensus of opinion even from the auto electric factors was that I was stuck with eBay.
I had even tried the local Land Rover dealership, still waiting for the return phonecall even after a prompting call from me, they won't get a lot of trade from me in the future, as if I expected anything different but I could have been anyone who might have had a few grand burning a hole in my pocket to spend on a new Green Oval.
I did get a response from another motor factors by late afternoon and there'll be one on their counter by 11am Monday, even better in that I get a bit of discount there as well through our Land Rover Club.

I'm not sure if this was a one off on my motor,
I do they all eventually wear like that?

There was a good 2mm free play on the shaft,
Which makes all the difference to the correct position of the park switch.

It would be interesting if anyone else has ever had this problem? 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

My wipers have gone woop teets today, have started by taking the dash out, almost all the way

Had the same issue on my 300 Tdi a few years back there was free play in the shaft and the plunger was pushing the wheel away and not going in far enough to activate the park. I seem to remember bending the circling so it was dished and put it back like that as this had the effect of pulling the wheel closer to the switch as a temporary repair but can’t remember ever sorting it properly before it got stolen (the car not the wiper motor) ! 2005 Td5 90 XS
