Swivels .. shimming
Hi

I’ve had a wheel wobble issue for a while now. I was checking the preload of the swivels this weekend and found them to be very loose so possibly causing the wheel wobble issue.

However, having removed the shims from the top pin and replaced with the thinnest one available I still have next to no resistance in the swivel.

Is the next stage a change in swivel bearing? Top and bottom? Or can you get away with just changing the top bearing race and therefore not having to do a complete rebuild?

Thanks 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

If the swivels have been "very loose" as you say, this won't have done the bearings any good.
Both top and bottom have been run with slack, so I'd say both will be worn and should be replaced.

I don't know if you can do a full top bearing properly without stripping the hub?

I’ve just done my swivels, the bearings were cheap even for timiken ones Thumbs Up straight forward job if you take your time IMO. The resistance seems to be set much lower on the newer cars? The replacement top bearings were also much larger than the original ones fitted to my TD5...

You'll have to strip it down fully even to do one bearing unless you go for the pikey method and just swap one race leaving the other in the ball - don't do this as it will fail in a very short time.

As above a straightforward enough job. If your caliper pipe brackets are slotted you don't even need to bleed the brakes, but most aren't unfortunately.

Mine wasn't slotted, I just took the whole bracket off and moved it out the way Thumbs Up didn't need to crack open any pipes etc.

Lol .. I suppose I was looking to see whether I could get away with a quick job, but you’ve answered that.
