OK.... a good audience.
Why are everyone going for the go-pro (I feel I am missing something). For my trip I have been researching rugged video cameras so I can catch the action.... and wanted something for my snowboarding, diving etc. When first looking I hated the look of the go-pro, and favoured the contour- about the same price/ specs etc, but the contour was more streamline. But after watching about 20 videos in HD I realised that most of the time the go-pro gave a warmer picture (not always good) and better sound- so it looked like I was biting the bullet and getting the 'ugly option'. But then... a video came up comparing those two to also the DRIFT and SONY cameras which 50% of the time were better than the go-pro.... about 20 more videos later it was between the Sony and go-pro, and again pretty much the same price (slightly more for the Sony). But then it was like I was hit in the face by a huge wet fish- The replay 1080 was bought to my attention (not sold in the UK)..... When it comes to image and sound the Replay destroyed the go-pro in the majority of different conditions. It just makes me wonder why so many people still buy the go-pro- I must be missing something- but then again loads of people buy the contour over the go-pro which I think is crazy too. Is it just because it is advertised better/ more outlets?.... Or am I really missing something? Glyn |

Not sure, but you do see them being used a lot on tv, they seem to be strapped to tv cameramens heads wherever you look. Due to lack of knowledge of any of the competition, that would swing it for me. Perhaps I'm just gullible ?

I've tried pretty much every action camera.
ContourHD, great quality, mounts made out of melting ice....... Sony AS15, not very practical, but great in low light. Again, mounts pretty bad Drift, no, just no..... Didn't like anything about it, quality wasn't good I was also a hater of the GoPro, I now have a Hero 3 Black.......... Ok, it's still a little large, but nothing compares to it. I have been debating for about 3 months which one to buy and it was only Greeni's offer than made me take the risk and sell my sole to GoPro. I've not personally tried the Replay, but I've not heard good things about it. Oh, and you can get them in the UK. I have been a hater of GoPro ever since the beginning, I am converted. Quality, angle, mounts, speed, functions, useability. All good. Thing is, the GoPro has things like 30fps still capability at 12mp. It also does 60fps at 1080 It'll take a lot to tumble it from the top spot. Oh and as for colour quality etc..... The black edition captures in Raw (well, almost raw) which makes it even more controllable. As already mentioned it, the GoPro is used globally by many broadcasters/film makers. Yes, ok, maybe corporate marketing by GoPro, but they wouldn't use them if they didn't do the job. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

I use mine as a camera too, I just stick it on stuff and let it click away on it's own. Plus it's great for in the sea.

Cool! ....and of course, the GoPro App is powerful but yes, some others have similar, but the WiFi Remote is awesome. Now that's pretty good and the range is huge. So for instance, take GREENI's photo, you could have the WiFi remote inside the Landy and turn the camera on/off, start/stop etc.... all from inside. The display on the remote mirrors the display on the camera too. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

Cheers for that informative post
When I say I don't like it- it has always been about the looks and that is all- and being a Defender owner, it isn't about the looks but what it does what is important...... but that said- I would never buy a Defender because certain people use them or they have better advertising. I haven't heard anything bad about the Replay other than a few damaged due to bad packaging from the supplier . Have you any more information on problems?.... would be V interested to know before I spend pennies. I guess it comes down to what you want it for. I will be mainly using it for long periods of time (mostly in 720- go pro gets about an hour at 1080p with pro-shot thingy on) and all I want from it is good audio and video. I am very old fashioned in that I have have a phone to make phone calls, a computer to access the net.... so I use a DSLR to take pictures... no offence but a gopro or any other point and shoot will not compare to that. I then have a Olympus Mju8010 for point and shoot (14MP) which is rock solid/ waterproof. Then there is price....... You can buy 2 replay 1080xd for the price of one gopro hero black. When you say there are UK dealers..... you mean stealers. The package in the US costs £190 (RRP) where in the UK they sell them for £280. That is a £90 mark up... not taking into account the discount they will receive for being a dealer. So in the end they are probably making about £120-150ish profit on each unit sold. What is the gopro fish-eye effect like once on the big screen? I only watch things on a 13" screen at the moment so it is quite evident (like on Greeni's picture). Glyn |

Agree with everything you say there! The GoPro has got fisheye, however, to achieve the huge wide angle shots, theres little you can do with such a small lens. What you can do though is change the FOV. You can take the angle down smaller which helps with reducing fisheye, but of course, you don't get the full wide shot. It can also be corrected in post editing. This is what they do on the all great GoPro corporate videos. What you have to remember is that the video you are getting on these are not "out of camera" quality, they've been edited and corrected. For a view of how wide the angle can be and of course the fisheye, here's a vid I did last week with the GoPro connected to the front passenger headrest as you can see, there's a little bit of fisheye but I was very impressed with the fact that it's almost next to my head, yet I'm (and another passenger would be) in shot. Nice video, and I must admit the super wide effect is good there. unfortunatly for me I am also old fashioned when it comes to software- I am terrible at it all, so the less editing I do the better
I am just being lazy now- Does the gopro have something like the replay has: http://replayxd.com/product/xd1080-hardwire-start-stop-4-meter/. A cable that will allow me to have permanent power and stream the data so I can save straight to my external hard drive (500GB) when in the vehicle as this will save me a lot of changing memory cards. I hate how I have to reserch something for about 6 months before even considering buying anything Glyn |

That, I don't know. It is a great feature I have to admit. I know you can connect it to a live stream, so there must be a way.........maybe? Hmmmm, off to find my friend Google. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

Can't seem to find anything, probably need a HDMI recorder for it.
However, you say you'd be changing cards...... On average (this is variable on light and other factors) a 32gig card will record almost 4.5 hours in 1080 (30fps) and of course it can take a 64gig so you can pretty much double that to 9 hours . A card would be far more reliable than a good old HDD moving on bumpy ground. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

Im getting close to buying a GoPro Hero3 Black, though Im slightly baffled by the choice of additional kit available and i'm not entirely sure which extras I might need.
I reckon Id use it most.. Inside of my Defender Outside of my caravan when towing Mountain bike handlebars/saddle (not helmet) RC car? So which additional mounts are worth buying for filming from the inside & outside of my Defender? Is the iPhone app better to use than the WiFi remote, or does the remote offer loads more features? Does the iPhone app work over 3G or just wifi? Anyone used the bike saddle mount? http://www.evanscycles.com/products/k-edge...o-ec045194 Last edited by WarPig on 30th Jan 2013 1:55pm. The Black comes with the remote included.
The remote is awesome, I find it better than the App. I only use the App so that I can see a live shot when setting the camera up. The App is good, but you need to connect to the camera via WiFi, the camera acts as a WiFi AP so you have to come off whatever WiFi you're currently connected to. To be honest, the mounts included in the pack get you going for starters, but you will need the handlebar clamp. This can be mounted on the seat post too (unless you have an adjustable seat post). I like the K-Edge mounts, but think they are waaaaaaay over priced. I've also got a Manfrotto clamp that I've had for years that works well for the Landy, but you also need the GoPro Tripod mount. http://www.cameragrip.co.uk/acatalog/hague_sc2_clamp.html This clamp will suit many applications! As for outside the Landy, you may want the suction mount if you can't clamp it to anything. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |
