One of he best mods you can do, is buy yourself 3 relays (the spotlight type) and 3 holders, and some cable, and a couple of fuse holders.

Build yourself a headlight loom, like tha ARB one you can get.

In short, it's one relay to run both headlights on dipped, and the other two for main beam (one relay for each light). There is a 12v feed, coming straight from the battery to run this loom, and the relays are controlled/powered by the feed to one of your headlights (the ARB loom has a "H4 headlight" plug which plugs straight into the loom where the headlight would normally go, but you can get the feed from further back up the loom, or indeed use the headlight feed should you not want to butcher your existing loom or one day revert back)

When I fitted mine, it instantly made the lights whiter, instead of yellowish. I've since made other looms for other vehs i've had.

The benifits of this loom are 3fold.

1) it stops the poxy LR headlight switch from having to actually switch the headlight current... the new relays take care of this, stopping the switch from melting

2) you get a better current and voltage feed to the lights, hence the whiteness not yellowness

3) you can upgrade to say, 80/70watt lamps (illegal yes, but that's another subject and you may well be using it on private land, right? Whistle ) without risking melting the wiring, which can only just about handle the 60/55 lamps

Ha thanks for the advice! Makes sense!! Smile in my hilux I had 90-120 watt bulbs, put them in my 90 when I got it prior to knowing how pathetic the switch was and yes it died! Had to put me another stick etc in!! Still got the bulbs though! Wink 90 Puma HT

You can buy a ready made, excellent quality, wiring loom with all relays, plugs and fuses etc: from here
https://shop.landreiziger.nl/modificatie/m...elais.html
Site owner/seller is called Martin. Fantastic service and writes and understands English . Fitted easily except for the connection to rear of alternator, that is virtually impossible without removing the alternator, so I chickened out and wired a heavy duty supply direct from battery. Works really well. Thumbs Up LANDYWATCH

Do not forget that headlights are powered through the on/off switch. Upgrading the wiring with relays can provide a useful gains . Its what I would do first, however when travelling long distances at night I have my lightforce genises, wide angle and spot. Thumbs Up

I can't find the actual ARB schematic, but googling "headlight relay diagram" brings loads up.

They're all much of a muchness. 2 or 3 relays (presonally i'd use 3... one for both dipped, then one for each main beam... or just 2 but the high current 30amp relays)

Brendan,

Interesting to read that Nakatenga website say that it even makes sense to use their relay harness even for Defenders having installed Speakers which consume only 35W each instead of 55/60W. I presume that has nothing to do with more light as believe to understand that as long that the Speakers get minimum 12V fed, there is no difference in light emitted if there would be 13V or more reach the lamps....
I once asked Tim abt such relay, and he said no need... Nakatenga say that even with the 2X35W there is a risk of burning the Defender light switch, albeit at a later moment...
In your opinion, does it make sense to use a relay with Speakers, or not?
If so, pls note that I have an SVX, so the aux high beams already run via a relay. I further have halogen fog lights which also are routed via separate relays, actually the fogs specifically now run via 3 relays to avoid any interference with the Speaker electronics which initially proved a problem.
I also have a Alive DRL bumper which is also powered via a separate relay.
If it makes sense in my case to have the Speakers also run via a relay, which of the 6 relay options on the bottom of the Nakatenga website do I need for the Speakers?
Do you offer these products, or would I have to order direct from Nakatenga?
Tks, Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.
