I was told two weeks ago by the Service Receptionist at a Land Rover dealership that their computer was being updated to ensure that servicing costs across the UK were more consistent.
I did smile as I'm well aware that overhead costs for running a business across the UK vary widely. So then I asked about their current prices for a Defender service. The result was a textbook example of 'confusion marketing'. First there was the standard price, then there was the standard price minus 10% (if you were bold enough to ask if they offered ant discounts), then there was the discounted 'service plan (buy two services, pay up front and get £150 discount and 10% off any spares/accessories in the Land Rover bazaar), then there was the 'you should have bought another model of Land Rover and got free servicing or £500 for 5 years servicing'. Confused? It doesn't have to be! Personally I became increasingly concerned, not just about the costs but also about the quality and thoroughness of the work actually carried out. You are paying a shed load of money for what can hardly be described as a technically challenging exercise in filter and lubricant changes. |

For me it was simply a matter of maintaining the warranty. Once Jan 16 arrives I will be carrying it out myself with the exception of the body work inspections to keep up the corrosion warranty.

Quotes started at £650 for me, got it down to £480 by asking them to price match My Disco 'best bits'

I just see it as an overhead in maintaining the warranty. There is no justification for charging more than £350 for what is nothing more than a simple oil/filter, air filter & diesel filter change with plentiful Ford-spec oil.
Mine will be out of warranty for the next service and I'll use a local garage or do it myself. |

Of course you could opt to use a reputable independent, if they use approved parts then your warranty will not be compromised. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

Unfortunately in my case the local indies are not that great and in the past have been little cheaper than the LR dealer. I suspect that they price themselves just below LR; it's a good business to be in!
We are long-term customers of our LR dealer and can't fault the service they provide. It's just become too expensive...a bit like their vehicles. I do use an indy for my Lotus and the Lotus dealership have never really queried it when it goes back in for warranty work. Other than a quick dig about how it would be nice to bring it to them for servicing as well as fixing stuff! |

Hatfields in Liverpool are advertising servicing from £249. I was there on Monday. They had 9 brand new Defenders on the forecourt.

Just dropped mine off for its 24k service. Bloke on desk said do I want the optional air con and diff oil change.
Didn't know how much it would cost! Do I really need a axle (not diff oil change) 110 is 9 months old and has covered 24k miles. Service sheet says 80k. |

I believe there was a case a few years ago, a guy serviced a new car himself from new he had a warranty claim and ended up in court .He won and this set a precedent for all future warranty claims.Basically if you service to the manufactures spec and intervals with the correct parts have receipts they have to honour your warranty.I have always serviced all my vehicles from new and stamp the service book.I have just serviced my 2012 2.2 hard top, all oils, engine, diffs, transfer, gear box, all filters Total cost £120.00 Just for the record the front diff oil was disgusting at 17000 so no way would i leave it till the recommended 80k. Have fun.

How did you get around the corrosion and paintwork inspection requirements? Updating ECU software is another issue.

Having it done, just don't get options on service, it needs it or it doesn't. But judging by the fact defender finishes soon best look after this one.

Hi Gaz, what do you mean by disgusting? Dark, bad smelling ? I'm going to have mine serviced next week. They offered the service for € 730 ... 820 to me. This is about £ 550. The cheaper one offered a front diff oil change, I intend to drop the diff oil change in order to reduce costs. Now I'm rethinking my decision ... Last edited by Jukathy on 25th Jan 2015 11:31am.
