Nope ! There is no way im stopping the slagging on this 2,2 , 25 yrs a customer and 14 LRs later All i bought this time was an oval badge . How can there be so much greatness and excitement about a defender that has less weight , cheeper parts , thinner panels and an engine that has been strangled to the point of death just so it can tick the boxes of the EU emitions control . just so it can get past another year , Just so Mr Tata can get shot of it and not have the irony of a 65 yr old dinausaur hanging around his stable . Everything that has been mentioned about this 2.2 new modern super efficient environmentally friendly defender goes against the whole point and meaning of what a defender stands for . Have all you new owners who think this 2.2 is the greatest thing since sliced bread gone mad ? There are hundreds of postings about how this engine management system and its dpf are killing this engine , hundreds of listings from those desperate to get it remapped , desperate to get it running right and you say this is the greatest defender ever ? all for the sake of emitions and the environment eh ! If you want to be environmentally friendly , fuel efficient , and kind to the EU then you should have bought a Toyota a Nissan a Smart car an electric hybrid anything but a Landrover Defender . Im ragging at thoughts of this being a great defender .

I had a Jaguar XF, that had a DPF. It was fine on my 40 mile enthusiastic motorway commute everyday. My wife borrowed it to pootle around town for a bit and very quickly (less than an hour's driving) got an orange warning light. Handbook said car should be driven at speed for at least 30 minutes. Did this and no problems since.
I recently moved offices - my commute is now 7 miles, country roads - part of my justification for getting the Defender was it would be better suited to shorter journeys. When I ordered it, it was the tail end of the 2.4 and the salesman said it might be a 2.2, but it was essentially the same. He didn't mention the DPF and if I new about it I would have gone for a 2.4 instead. However, 7,000 miles later, mostly short journeys, not had a warning light come on yet. Do we get an early warning light, or is it just straight to catastrophic failure? |

Kieth, no one said I never said it was the greatest defender ever built. Just that the 2.2 is the most civilised and nicest to drive defender ever built, whilst still doing the job it was intended for. Personally I think the 2.4/ 2.2 are not too different so we will blanket them and say, the puma is the most civilised and easiest to drive defender yet. The fact is that no matter how anti EU and how little you care about emissions, as a land rover fan you're still going have to listen up and accept that defenders have to match the same rules and laws as all other cars, so if you want a new land rover, which is still as good as the day they were made at doing its job, the you're going to have to own one that complys with the rules made in Brussels. On the tuning note, I don't understand why so many people are obsessed with tuning pumas to make them run better. For more power, yes I get that. But for a smoother ride?? I think the engine and the gear box compliment each other perfectly and it's a joy to drive. Plus the lowest ever, high range 1st gear is really useful. |

x2 You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

well whatever people think about the 2.2 it has the distinction of being the last ever Defender engine which will bestow a certain amount of kudos as the years pass.
By the way its quieter than a 2.4 but not quieter than the 2.4 with a Noisekiller engine blanket ! |

Dropped my 2.4 in at the stealers today for its 2nd service and a list of 15 warranty items needing attention. Loan car was a brand new (700 miles on the clock) 62 plate 110 Utility XS - factory standard in Aintree Green. After driving 30 miles to the stealers and jumping straight into it, was amazed at how refined the engine was and how quiet in the cab. Doesn't sound clunky like the 2.4. Also, the rear exhaust was as shiny as when it left the factory so the DPF doing its job! Not thick with black soot like mine
Not sure about the lack of guts. Got no towing to do this weekend so couldn't comment. Was eye opening getting into a new defender. Goes to show how tired mine is looking after 14 months / 25,000 miles |

Good thread - I'm really pleased to read about so many people pleased with the 2.2 despite all the whining within the forum. Luddites beware.

Yer I'm pleased a lot if people seem happy with their 2.2s and 2.4s. They are both great engines. Pains me when I read on here about people canceling orders of new defenders or been put off getting one by other people who have had issues or just had moans with new defenders. I think if you have the money for a puma then just go for it and see how it goes, because if you get a good one it will be great and if not then it will (for a while) be in warranty anyhow. People get hung up on the past too much when it comes to land rovers. Just got to except they are changing, love them because they are still great, and most importantly, don't worry about it too much, life's too short.

it baffles me too ... if you want to go fast buy an M3 or a caterham .. defenders are the wrong shape. Having said that, I've never driven a tricked-up defender - then there's the economy question ... some people say tuned defenders are more economical ... again you don't buy a defender for it's fuel efficiency but you probably don't want to make it worse ... my thoughts |
