steering boss
I know this may seem like a dumb question, but why are the steering boss' fitted to the small steering wheels (Mine's a momo) so "deep", seeing as I am a bit of a short arse and I have the seat a little forward the steering wheel is very close to my ample belly... yeah yeah, I know, get rid of the belly, easier said than done, so back to the question, the steering wheel is a lot closer because of the boss, so why are they so deep? or high? can I modify a boss to put the wheel back? I'm sure there is a perfectly reasonable explanation Whistle Optimists say the glass is half full..
Pessimists say the glass is half empty..

Extended/raised seat rails worked for me in several ways - I believe I have similar physical "attributes" to you Whistle
Combine with raising the cubby (extra storage) and driving is almost comfortable Wink

p.s. I also have a deep boss but don't know why... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

I made a boss for my momo wheel, as the supplied one was about 4" deep!

I took an old steering wheel, cut the middle splined piece out, then turned it on the lathe at work to make it "round" again, then cut a piece of 4mm plate, turned that so it was round, and cut a hole in the middle of it, welded the piece from the steering wheel into it, drilled and tapped the holes for the screws to hold the wheel on. job done.

I've got some pics somewhere I'll post up.

Ha - raising the cubby box, why didnt I think of that! Have put the seat risers on and fitted my Momo Tuner wheel with quick release boss and all is well except my left elbow is 5cm too high to rest easy on the top of the cubby. Been thinking of a extra padded cubby lid or have a surgical adaptation to my elbow! Neither would be a good idea - but raising the Cubby box is so flippin obvious - thanks Ze, its on my mod list! 90 XS

OK, back in topic....

Very picture heavy this one:

OK, here's how I made my steering wheel boss. The reason for it was the one I bought (as most seem to be) was HUGE! It brought the wheel a good 4 inches or to towards me, which looked ugly and made for a naff driving position.

The bought boss:

So I got hold of an old knackered 4 spoke wheel with the correct splines, and set about cutting the middle piece out of it with an angle grinder.
Not pretty, but quick!

I then stuck it in the lathe at work, and turned it into a proper round shape.

Then I took a piece of thick (think it was 6mm or so) plate, and cut that into a round shape on the lathe, and also cut a hole through the centre of it to take the turned-down boss from the old wheel:

Placing this turned flat plate onto the new steering wheel, I could mark the position of the screw holes, drill them and tap them out:

So the middle splined boss needed to be welded to the plate:

I also welded a thin (1mm or so) piece of flat steel to make a skirt, just to hide the backside of the boss and make it look a bit neater.
Some black paint, and job done!
