If it is that hard I think I would use a flap sander in an angle grinder to get it smooth and then do as K9F said.
Health warning - flap sander in an angle grinder can do lots of damage so practice first on some scrap first if you want to try this. Well this is what I got to last night.
Christ know what this stuff is. This morning I have been attacking it with a steam gun. Not really working but when it does come of it is in some places taking the laquer and even the paint off with it. I also norticed that the metal clips on the bottom of the LR?Mantec one have reacted with the alloy and stated to eat into it so that is another reason I will never use one of those again. I am nearly at the point of leaving it now and hoping the safari gaskit will seal over the top of this stuff. I don't like bodging and can turn my hand to most thing s but this has nearly got me beat. Not a bad job considering what you were up against. I would smother it in Sikaflex gasket over the top another bed of Sikaflex and then snorkel. Using turps substitute or white spirits once the lot has been bolted on wipe the excess off. Job jobbed!

Sounds a good plan. Just waiting for the G10 store (ebay) to deliver the sealant and I will need to get a step drill form one of my suppleirs so to drill out the pilot holes to 16mm. Not one bloody diy or hardware store had one round here. Boy |

Just a quick addition/tip.......If you are very careful in aligning the template and continually 'offer' the snorkel up you don't have to take the holes out bigger than 12mm. I got away with 12mm! Why drill bigger holes than is absolutely necessary? 'Wet assemble' everything with the sealant and you should have no corrosion issues. Thanks chap. I might try to get away with a 12mm hole first. Will not be doing it until next weekend now. I also have another question. This is a photo of the air filter box taken though the wing top. Are you supposed to see the filter showing through the near corner? You can see it just I the photo. I am going to strip it out during the week but initially it looks like apart from that corner it is fitting as it should do. |

Doing a good job there 'The Boy'. I purchased some SIKAFLEX-221 Multi-purpose Sealant which I am now thinking will not be removable should I ever have to. So may not use it now after seeing your struggle. What type of sealant did you get?

I took a different approach and used butyl tape (my weapon of choice) - rolled up to make a nice fat bead all around the gasket and then tightened the bolts to squash. No mess, no problem becoming unsealed (it never comes unsealed) and easily removable if you need to
I love Sikaflex 291 but I don't trust it completely to seal plastic surfaces "for ever" in places I can't see... Just an idea Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Interesting quote....What do you use then that you can trust? The snorkel bolts are a considerable distance apart and a pressure fit is always better in my opinion. Laying a thick bed of sealant and pressure fitting is better than butyl unless it is really quite thick butyl. Details of 29i state "Fast cure marine adhesive/sealant and bedding compound. Ideal for bedding in skin fittings, fully waterproof, can be for below the waterline applications." I would trust Sikaflex everytime, not heard of anyone usuing butyl tape below the waterline before, may suggest it, Condor Ferries could save a fortune.
It is! Stick with it it will not disappoint or let you down. Leave it on your skin for more than 10 minutes and you will be stuck with it, for at least four days anyway! As I said, I use Sikaflex for loads of stuff and it's wonderful. However, butyl has held our caravan together (and sealed all the windows and roof vents on), without a leak for 15+ years. On the other hand, 291 has lost its grip on my window rubber after 6 months, so I wouldn't call it flawless. Certain plastics (especially polythene) are very resistant to "permanent" sealants and this can happen after some time. This was my logic. When warm, a thick bead of butyl squashes, sticks and seals really well permanently... until you want to remove it without a trace No, I haven't used it on my submarine but its qualities are well known where high water pressures are involved e.g. swimming pools etc. http://www.aquabond.com/s.nl/it.A/id.115/.f http://www.poolcenter.com/repair_supplies_anderson.htm http://www.waternsports.com/Store/shopdisp...+Detection Like I said Sikaflex is great, it was just my personal choice not to use it for my RAI... Hope I haven't offended anyone with my humble opinion Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Not at all....Good debate is healthy! Everyone is naturally entitled to their opinions and sharing experiences help those that are less informed in making the right choice or perhaps even the wrong choice of their own! They then in turn get to share theirs! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |
