Increase output of Head Lights and replacement Clutch
Hi

Can anybody help me with regards to the following questions:

2008 XS Defender 110

1. The head lights are not very bright so I have considered upgrading to increase the output of light. Although the manual informs me that the bulbs are H7. When I research for a replacement it indicates H4. the beam is even worse when we travel abroad to do dog shows Dog as the beam has to be restricted. Can any body help Idea

2. I have been informed by my dealer that the clutch needs replacing. I have only done 63,000 miles which I feel is a low mileage but they are saying wear and tear comes into place. Can anybody give me an idea as to what the clutch mileage should roughly be? Exclamation

I am new to this forum so it will take a while to get used to, but from what I can see it certainly is very good for information and chatter. Thumbs Up

Cheers

Hiya Jupiler ... welcome to the forums Thumbs Up

Headlights ... if you dont mind spending a grand or so then the LED headlights are just about THE brightest/clearest light you can get. Small fortune yes, but you'll be blown away by their performance.
Have a word with Tim at mobilecentre [site sponsor on here]

For a more sensible price. replace the headlights with free form units available from Paddocks/craddocks/ MM etc, and buy performance Xenon bulbs. Nowhere near as good as the LED option, but about £60 all in gets you a noticeable increase in performance.

Oh and yes, Defender headlights take an H4 bulb.

Clutch ... Hmmmm, how long is a piece of string??
There was a service bulletin about clutch issues, but as yours is out of warranty its unlikely you'll get anywhere with the line of enquiry. A fair few say goodbye in the 60 - 80 thou range, some much earlier.
A lot depends on style of driving, vehicle use etc .... no definative answer im afraid

HTH Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

Hi Dave-H

Thanks for your advise.

I will go for the H4 Xenon bulbs as it sounds a lot cheaper, plus If it did go for the LED headlights my better half would go for a another puppy and I would end up in the Shed. Shocked

With regards to the Clutch, I learn't from a long time ago to extend the warranty. I had an Isuzu Trooper and the engine blew up just after the warranty. Luckily, thanks to my local garage making inquiries, It should have had a recall so they had to replace the engine and Turbo etc which caused the problem. From then I always get extended warranties.

Can you let me know a little bit more on the service bulletin ? At least its a fighting chance.

Thanks again for your help.

Cheers

there's a few threads on headlights on the forum, do a search...

Land Rover headlight switches are made from cheese and are very delicate, don't be tempted to put 100watt bulbs in to replace the standard 55/60s because your switch will melt and you won't have any headlights.

depending on how handy you are, you could pop a relay into the circuit and this will really help.

I have PIAA super white ultra blah blah bulbs .. have a look on the PIAA web site, there's a few to choose from, but they are all about £60 a pair.

HID/Xenon replacement kits are widely available but you'll fail your MOT because they are not legal in the UK and probably many parts of europe.

let us know how you get on Thumbs Up

I opted for a headlight upgrade to ARB IPF 100w bulbs, IPF lamps and IPF loom ( available from Devon )
A little more than simply swapping bulbs ( about £200 ) but much brighter and much cheaper than the LED options.
My landy is the one behind.

Re clutches - First lasted 60,000, second after an engine Tune has lasted 18 months - now replacing with a heavy duty old style clutch.

Jupiler, as to light upgrade for your H4's.... Land Rover are offering now a so called Xenon bulb upgrade for the Defender. These are not really Xenon bulbs, but normal filament H4's filled with Xenon gas. Replacing your existing standard H4's by those upgraded ones offered by Land Rover will give already a very distinctive improvement over standard H4's, and very importantly, will keep you fully legal.

I had these higher output H4's installed by my dealer, and the result is very good. Much brighter, very white light, but not blue-ish as some of those upgraded bulbs are which is a disaster I think. These offered by LR are of a very natural white light. Land Rover part number is VPLDV0061. Price is a few tenners.

You can see it on the Land Rover UK website, go to Defender accessories, click "exterior protection and lighting" and you will find it. I think this is the correct link to that website. http://www.landrover.com/gb/en/lr/defender/accessories/

Rgds, eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.
