A decent subwoofer speaker or a 'bassy' speaker?
Now that I have installed my La Salle headlining and I have my 4 Alpine speakers wired up, I can finally listen to music again, which is brilliant. The Alpine head unit and speakers are incredibly crisp and clear, however it needs a little more bass.

I had originally dismissed the idea of a sub woofer,I certainly don't want a big box taking up a load of space in the rear.

What options do I have in a 90? I think I saw photos someone posted showing a big speaker in the back of a cubby (but they didn't have the bulkhead and I do, and the rear of my cubby faces my ECU, not sure it is a good idea to send thumping ohms at it!)

The box under the drivers seat seems wasted, could I put one in there?

Anyone got examples of good speakers that don't cost the earth? I think maximum of £100, as its not my daily driver.

If it were not for needing my centre seat I have seen a cubby with a pair of 10 inch one each side it still had a lid and enough space for a passport above the cones. Very sweet bit home made but still cool. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

This is where I am out of my depth, I don't understand the differences between powered/non powerwed/Active etc.

Having looked at the manual for my Alpine head unit (it's not a high spec model, its the CDE-120R) I have an RCA out port with the two audio sockets. Is this where I would plug in a Sub or do I need an amplifier too?

I have the feeling this will be more involved than I thought!

Alternatively I could just swap out my rear Alpine speakers for something with more bass to them, but again, not really sure what Shocked 2016 D4 HSE

Another vote for the Alpine Powered Subs.

Essentially you can wither buy a sub speaker, fit it into some sort of enclosure to maximes the effect, and then run it off an amp or:

buy a powered amp, which has all three componets in one.

I fitted an alpine one which meant that I could fit a much smller amp to run the 2 6x9 speakers I have in the rear

lrmaniac, is that a self powered sub and speaker all in one?

I am liking the thought of one of those, I could mount that on the back of the bulkhead and then its out of the way. 2016 D4 HSE

This from the Puma workshop manual.

"The Clarion® SRV313 sub-woofer is located on the cabin floor below the center cubby box and is secured to the floor
with two self-tapping screws.
The sub-woofer is connected to the head unit via a link cable from the head unit. Two phono plugs provide speaker
inputs for LH and RH inputs and are colored white and red respectively for identification and connect into the 'Input B'
sockets (the 'Input A' socket is not used). A power supply socket provides power and ground for unit power. A 'Remote
Control' socket allows for the connection of the remote control unit.
Remote Control and Auxiliary Socket"

I did consider this one but was advised by a local radio specialist to buy the Alpine for overall performance. prices were similar if i recall and both easy to fit. It's all down to personal choice. Confused BM52

I like the look of this and it matches my Alpine gear.

Approx how much did you pay? There are some on eBay for about £160. 2016 D4 HSE

As above. Don't just look at Alipne they aren't the only one's out there. There is Kenwood who I'd personally recommend but also the likes of JVC Clarion ect ect. All have good points in different ways. The only time you could go wrong is if you don't buy premium brands I wouldn't suggest doing that or it may well be a buy cheap buy twice.

Thanks for all the advice, I think this is the way I will go.

The only hard part will be routing the RCA cables out of the dash to get to the unit, might need to take various bits apart to do that. 2016 D4 HSE
